Dowdy Jefferson Carolyn Roy Dowdy, 62, of 3715 Brockton Road died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Dowdy was a daughter of the late Roy and Alice Brewer Mason. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at the church with the Rev. Hulon Hill officiating. Burial will be in Banks Memorial Gardens, Homer. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Survivors include her husband, Charles Dowdy, Jefferson; two sons, Mike Dowdy and Steve Dowdy, both of Homer; and six grandchildren. A native of Rabun County, Miss Eller was a daughter of the late Dillard Oscar and Mary Elizabeth Benfield Eller. She was a homemaker and a member of Hill Street Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Joe Nichols and Paul Garrison officiating. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Reed, Burbank, Ohio, Mildred Page, Greenville, S.C., and Martha Oakley, Toccoa; a brother, John Eller, Inglis, Fla.; and nieces and nephews. Fambrough, 67, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996. A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Fambrough was the widow of Clarence Fambrough and was a member of Center United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wise-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard Banks officiating. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Hooper was a daughter of the late Joe and Mattie Vinson Fleeman. She was a retired homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, is in charge of arrangements. Hattie Johnson Athens Hattie Johnson, 91, of 157 Savannah Ave. died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996. A native of Athens, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Lee and Georgia Johnson and the widow of Nathan Johnson. She was a member of Old Dorsey Tabernacle Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Milo Weems officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Kay was a daughter of the late William David and Mary Ida King Brown. She was a retired nurses aide and a member of Elberton First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Lowe officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Linda K. Maxwell Warrenton Sara Steedman Maxwell, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996. A native of Asheville, N.C. and the widow of James E. Maxwell, Mrs. Maxwell was a homemaker and a member of Crawford United Methodist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Scruggs Cemetery, Norwood, with Dr. Gary Hadden officiating. Survivors include a grandson, Walter "Jay" Wilkes, Athens; two granddaughters, Johna Wilkes, Columbia, S.C., and Tara W. Smith, Warrenton; two great-grandchildren; and other family members. Tressa Meridith Athens Tressa "Mickey" Meridith of Westwood Hills died Thursday, Dec. 5, 1996. A native of New Jersey, Mrs. Meridith was a retired registered nurse who earned a nursing degree from Florida State University, worked in Kentucky and became a Kentucky Colonel. She taught at University of Miami and Daytona Beach Community College. Funeral services were last Thursday at Woodward Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, Fla. Survivors include her husband, Verne Meridith, Athens; three sons; two daughters; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. George F. Norton Athens George F. Norton, 91, of 250 Milledge Terrace died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996. A native of Athens, Mr. Norton was a son of the late George M. and Mary Bishop Norton and he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dr. Virginia Norton. Mr. Norton was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, assistant to the treasurer and a leader of the scout troop that met at the church. He participated in many other church activities in his younger years. His lifetime hobby was amateur radio and he was a charter lifetime member and assistant director of the board of the American Radio Relay League. He was a lifetime member of AMSAT, the amateur radio satellite organization and contacted 100 countries via satellite. He was active in providing telephone communication via radio telephones between overseas American servicemen and their families and friends. His call sign was W4EEE and was known as "Triple E." He was the first amateur radio operator to contact all states via radio telephones and one of the first to contact every country in the world by ham radio. Last fall, he received Number 1 ARRL DXCC Honor Roll plaque. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lord & Stephens Chapel, East, with Dr. Glenn Doak officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Helen Woods Norton; a daughter, Betty Norton, Miami; a sister, Mrs. W.C. Bowen, Thomaston; a brother, Dan H. Norton, Rome; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home. Pauline 'Polly' Scoggins Elberton Pauline "Polly" Scoggins, 77, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996. A native of Elbert County, Miss Scoggins was a daughter of the late M.T. and Bertha Mae Hall Scoggins. She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with the Revs. Chris Burton, David Shelley and Connie Ivester officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include four sisters, Tommie Christian, Elberton, Grace Maxwell, Forest Park, Geneva Thomason, Williamston, S.C., and Lila Barnes, Dalton; and nieces and nephews. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The body is at the funeral home and the family is at the residence of Joe M. Christian 381 College Ave., Elberton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church. Louis C. Stewart Union Point Louis Clayton Stewart, 81, of 803 Dolvin Ave. died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1996. A native of Union Point, Mr. Stewart was a son of the late Alvin and Lillian Lunceford Stewart. He finished junior college at Mercer University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Commerce from the University of Georgia. He retired from ownership of Stewart Oil Co. and was a director of the Farmer's Bank, Union Point. He had been treasurer of Union Point Church and president of the church's brotherhood, as well as treasurer and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Union Point. He served as president of the Union Point Lions Club, zone chairman for Lions International, first chairman of the Greene County Cattle Improvement Association. He was a member of the board of Greene County Hospital Authority and the Greene County Board of Education. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn Cemetery with the Revs. David Key and Alvin Taylor officiating. Survivors include his wife, Martha Dean Stewart, Union Point; three daughters, Barbara Norris and Peggy English, both of Union Point, and Becky Wilkes, Watkinsville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
