Watson Union Grove, N.C. James E. Watson, 56, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1996. A native of Starkville, Miss., Mr. Watson was a son of the late James A. and Maud Elizabeth Kelly Watson. He was a U.S. veteran of the Korean War and a retired truck driver with Butch Transportation, Statesville, N.C. Graveside services were Wednesday at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Robbie Black officiating. Survivors include a brother, Wilburn K. Rish, West Point, Miss.; a sister, Lois E. Dean, Winder; and three nieces. Carter-Stewart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Bertha Shiflet Hartwell Bertha Reed "MaMa Beet" Shiflet, 79, of 111 Rome St., Apartment 417-E, died Monday, Nov. 11, 1996. A native of Anderson, S.C., Mrs. Shiflet was a daughter of the late Sylvester and Mary Reed and the widow of Willie A. Shiflet. She was preceded in death by two sons, Willie Shiflet and Donald Shiflet. She was a member of Cedar Spring Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. S.T. Grimes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.. Survivors include a son, James Shiflet, Hartwell; four daughters, Karey Curry, Bronx, N.Y., and Jewel Stowers, Joan Gaines and Christine Rucker, all of Hartwell; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Arnold, 93, of 1559 Archer Grove School Road died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 1996. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Arnold was a son of the late W.D. and Alice Kittle Arnold. He owned and operated his own business and was a member of Mizpah Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Michael Pike and Dayton Logan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday. Survivors include his wife, Lois Moore Arnold, Athens; and nieces and nephews. Browner, 69, of 3501 Jefferson Road died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Browner was a son of the late John Henry and Ida Lou Browner. He was employed by Bell's Food Market and the late Dr. Ewring. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Walter and Mamie Letta Brown Boles. She was preceded in death by two brothers, W.O. Boles and Douglas Boles, and a sister, Mary Lynn Boles. She was a nursing assistant at Crawford W. Long Hospital. She was of the Baptist faith. Collier Toccoa Garnett Lee Collier, 88, of Route 2 died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Collier was a son of the late David H. and Fannie Dooley Collier. He was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters. He was a graduate of Toccoa High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from WABCO and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he taught men's Sunday school. Adams Mountain City Mary Melinda Adams, 96, of U.S. Highway 441 died Monday, Nov. 11, 1996. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Lula Rice and O.W.T. Rogers and the widow of Ralph Adams. She was a retired salesperson and former vice president of W.T. Rogers Company. She was a member of Rogers Baptist Church.
