Born on an Oconee County farm on Aug. 19, 1903, he was one of eight children born to Henry and Orrie S. Thurmond. Although he was small in stature, Mr. Thurmond was a person of big aspirations, a believer in hard work, and an even greater believer in God. "Everything I put my hands on He made a success. God has been with me all the way up the road," said Thurmond, who worshiped at Shady Grove Baptist Church for 73 years. He used the meager earnings derived from sharecropping to provide for a much beloved family. Affectionately called "Mr. Sidney" by the hundreds of people who knew and admired him, he was a great lover of humanity. "Mr. Sidney" never met a stranger. Despite not having a formal education, people always sought his wise counsel and insight. Nothing seemed to make him happier than communicating with others. Even in making his earthly departure, "Mr. Sidney" displayed his knack for making comforting and wise statements. "I'll see y'all on the other side," were his last words.
