A native of Fulton County, Mrs. Barge was a daughter of the late George Edward and Cecil Kathryn Oxford Armstrong. She was the mother of the late Ed Barge, Jr. She was the author of several books of poetry. She was a former employee of the Athens-Clarke County Library. She was a member of WMU and the Friendship class at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a charter member. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Royce McNeal and the Rev. Claude McBride officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. Survivors include, in addition to her husband, Ed Barge; a daughter, Maryanne B. Hayes, Memphis, Tenn.; and a brother, George Armstrong, Roswell. Pallbearers include Ray Neal, Bob Burton, Bill Boswell, James Farmer, Paul Jackson and Charles Clegg. The family will receive friends at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Remains will be placed in state at 9 a.m. Memorials may be made to Milledge Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund. Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge of arrangements. Ray Scarborough Winterville Alton Ray Scarborough, 55, of 125 Shoals Creek Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 22. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Scarborough was the son of the late How Scarborough and Lois Seagraves Scarborough. He was a route salesman for Tom's, Inc. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lord and Stephens Chapel, East, with the Rev. Rick Standard officiating. Internment will be in Athens Memory Gardens. Survivors include a son, Ricky Scarborough, Winterville; a daughter Lisa Callaway, Winterville; a sister, Barbara Eberhart, St. Simons Island; four grandchildren; and nieces. Thomas Melvin Parham, 60, of 10704 Kim Lane, formerly of Royston, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996. A native of Madison County, Mr. Parham was a son of Pauline Bryant Parham and the late Buford J. Parham. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Pruitte Funeral Home with Rev. Harwell Winder James Harold " Jim" Harwell, Jr., 69, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Harwell was a son of Jessie Johnson Harwell and the late James Harold Harwell, Sr. A 1951 Georgia Institute of Technology graduate, he was a former employee of the Lockheed Georgia Corporation. He was a member of the Union Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Union Baptist Church with Revs. Clifford Chandler and Jim Elliot officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Elizabeth Burnette Harwell; four sons, James H. A native of Hall County, Mr. Wofford was a son of the late Thomas H. Wofford and Minnie Lee Hill Wofford. He was retired from Jefferson Mills. Matthews Toccoa Nellie Elizabeth Matthews, 78, of Queen Street, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996. A native of Stephens County, Ms. Matthews was a daughter of the late Fate and Ora Williams Matthews. Hughes Rome Velma W. Hughes, 88, died Friday, Sept. 20, 1996. A native of Mayesville, Mrs. Hughes was a daughter of the late John White and Minty House White. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wiley R. Hughes, and by her second husband, Joel Hughes. She was retired from W. T. Grant Department Stores. She was of the baptist faith. Mabel O'Conner Athens Mabel O'Conner, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996. A native of Madison County, Mrs. O'Conner was a daughter of the late George and Earle Astion Freeman Chandler. She was the widow of James Judson O'Conner. She was preceded in death by four brothers, John Chandler, Walter Chandler, Sequard Chandler and Lewis Chandler. She lived in Madison County since 1961. She was retired from the University of Georgia Graduate School office after 35 years. She was a member of Danielsville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at the Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dayton Logan and Dr. Walter Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Martha Avery Athens Martha Green Avery, 89, of 360 Cedar Creek Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996. A native of Rome, Mrs. Avery was a daughter of the late Alfred J. Green and Mary Frances Berryhill Green. She was the widow of Dr. Julius H. Avery. She was a retired school teacher and a member of the First Baptist Church, Athens. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Laurence Avery, Chapel Hill, N.C., Dr. Joel Avery, Chattanooga, Tenn.; a daughter, Mrs. Lynn Avery Meredith, Athens; a brother, James Green, Rome; and a sister, Ann Holder, Rome. A native of Hart County, Mr. Goldsmith was a son of Florence Holmes Goldsmith and the late Johnny Goldsmith. He was a machine setter for B.A.S.F. and a member of the Greenville Hejaz Shrine Temple. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive Church of God with Revs. Wayne Durden and Randall Starrett officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Olive Church of God Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Chandler Sr. Temple, Texas Dr. J.B. Chandler, Sr., 92, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996. A native of Danielsville, Dr. Chandler was a son of the late James Bethel Chandler and Susan O'Kelly Chandler. He graduated from the University of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia in 1929. He retired from the Veterans Administration in 1973. Rev. Michael Wyckoff will officiate the funeral services. Survivors include two sons, Dr. J.B. Chandler, Jr., Temple, Charles E. Chandler, Houston; a sister, Molene Chandler Ellis, Hull, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
