A native of Clarke County, Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Ed and Mattie Johnson. He was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Luke A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Ken C. Williams Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Survivors include a sister, Ada Bell Smith, Englewood, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Inez Johnson and Mattie Johnson, both of Athens; and nieces and nephews. Smith, 88, of 236 Sims St., died Thursday, July 18, 1996. A native of Cherokee, N.C., Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Allen and Sara Burl Beck and widow of Paul G. Smith. She was a homemaker and a member of Riverside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Ledford. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. J.B. Wilkins officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeway Baptist Church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Survivors include three sons, Clyde Smith and Hoyt Smith, both of Gastonia, N.C., and Wallace Smith, Bessemer, N.C.; three daughters, Lollie Bell Chambers, Monroe, Mildred Fleeman, Goose Creek, S.C., and Sarah Hill, Winder; 22 grandchildren; 48 great-g randchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. Turner, 77, of 1527 Washington Road, died Thursday, July 18, 1996. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Turner was a retired shipping clerk with Thomson Co. and was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Edith Ellington Sunday school class, the Thomson Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars an d Woodmen of the World. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Thomson with the Rev. Jimmy Elder officiating. Burial will be in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Hedden was a daughter of the late J. Ben and Lona Thomason Fricks. She was a member of McConnell Memorial Baptist Church, Hiawassee, and was a former employee of Wright Manufacturing Co. She was married first to the la te Dennis F. Segars and then to the late William Carroll Hedden. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald F. Segars, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Whitlock Mortuary with Larry Fricks and Steven Wood officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Richard C. Newcomb, 78, died Thursday, July 18, 1996. A native of Lynn, Mass., Mr. Newcomb was a retired optician and licensed practical nurse. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in Europe. Funeral mass will be said at 2 p.m. today at St. Jude Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Hofstetter officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens. Survivors include his wife, Marie Louise Newcomb; a daughter, Ruth Newcomb, Athens; three sons, Ron Newcomb, Smyrna, Richard Newcomb, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Robert Newcomb, Athens; and four grandchildren.
