An Air Force veteran of World War II, he was retired from Coats & Clark and was a member of VFW Post 346 and Sunnyside Baptist Church. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University, having received his bachelor's and master's degrees, and the University of North Carolina, where he received his doctorate in sociology. He was a member of the sociology faculty at the University of Georgia for 33 years and was professor emeritus. He was active in local civic affairs and was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
