Jackson Lanier "Jack" Fields, 74, of Route 3, Brownwood Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Fields was a son of the late Howard and Grace Fields. A World War II veteran, he was an ordained minister with an honorary doctorate of divinity from Emmanuel Baptist College in Atlanta. He served as pastor to several surrounding county churches and was the owner and operator of Jack's Barber Shop and a member of Central Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Milton Burdette officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery, Elberton. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Hook Fields; a son, Steven L. Fields, Royston; a daughter, Vickie Horton, Athens; three sisters, Henrietta Patterson, Watkinsville, Veronica Wilson, Commerce, and Labretta Farr, Athens; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Talmadge Garrett Toccoa Eugene Talmadge Garrett, 63, of Camp Mikell Road died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996. A native of Habersham County, Mr. Garrett was a son of Theodore R. and Della Patterson Garrett. An Army veteran, he was retired from Duke Power Co. He was a member of Toccoa Church of God, where he served on the church council and was an elder. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Toccoa Church of God with the Revs. Harlan Noles, Chad Smith and Ted Ansley officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorials Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Sara W. Garrett; a daughter, Melanie Creswell, Stanley, N.C.; two sisters, Sandra Smith, Eastanollee, and Linda McBrier, Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, J.R. Gober Commerce Ruby Minish Gober, 88, of 36 Gober Road died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Gober was a daughter of the late Matthew Tolbert and Ella Hill Minish. She was a retired sewing machine operator for Blue Bell Manufacturing and a member of Blacks Creek Baptist Church. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Ivie was a daughter of the late Elmer and Eleanor Carlson and was preceded in death by a grandson, Dennis Roberts. She was homemaker and of the Lutheran faith. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Jackson was a son of the late Charlie and Annie Lou Thompson Jackson. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Zidon Baptist Church.
