A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mr. Free was a son of the late Joseph Franklin and Hattie Hamil Free and the widower of Kate Bridges. He lived most of his life in Athens and was a retired supply supervisor with Western Union and a member of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Sugar Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, Calhoun. Survivors include a son, William J. Free, Athens; a grandson, David William Free, Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Bernstein Funeral Home. McSwain Hartwell Mary Allene Nivens McSwain, 73, of 147 Athens St., died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997. A native of York County, S.C., Mrs. McSwain was a daughter of the late D.G. and Annie Carroll Nivens. She was a charter member of the Hartwell Sewing Club, a former member of Madora Garden Club, and a member of Gideons Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Hartwell First Baptist Church, where she was a member of Ruth Sunday school class and a former member of the choir. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Hartwell First Baptist Church with Dr. F. Hugh Kirby and the Revs. Byron Kennerly and Phillip W. McSwain officiating. Burial will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Survivors include her husband, William E. "Bill" McSwain; a son, William Michael "Mike" McSwain Sr., Hartwell; a sister, Janet Hopper, Clover, S.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family is at the residence. Tyrus Phillips Royston Tyrus Raymond Phillips, 77, of 1584 Cromers Bridge Road died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Claude and Susie Parten Phillips and the widower of Willie Ruth Rice Phillips. He was a farmer and poultry producer, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Sandy Cross Fire Department and a former school bus driver for the Franklin County School System. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pruitte Funeral Home with the Revs. Howard Hern and Ralph Goss officiating. Burial will be in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery. Lillian Pitts Crawford Lillian Chastain Pitts, 94, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Pitts was a daughter of the late Agbert and Vaxie Campbell Chastain and the widow of Cary Pitts. She was preceded in death by two sons, Alvin Pitts and Billy Pitts. She was a homemaker and a member of Palmetto Christian Church. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Elberton, with the Rev. Clifton Barrett officiating.
