Mr. Bannister was the widow of Eddye Mae Bannister. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. James P. Bannister. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Ingram Funeral Home with the Drs. A native of Taliaferro County, Mrs. Godbee was a daughter of the late Ellis and Irene Rice Sherrer and the widow of Wilbur Lee Godbee. She was a retired quality inspector at Chipman-Union Manufacturing and was a member of First Baptist Church. A native of Oglethorpe County, Ms. Hunter was a daughter of the late Nina Johnson and James Howard Hunter. She attended State Normal School and was retired after 31 years as a private secretary for Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Atlanta. She was a Red Cross volunteer and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Retired People, Sears Retirement Club and Siloam Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at McCommons Funeral Home, Greensboro, with the Rev. Robert M. Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Stephens. A native of Union County, Mrs. Richardson was a daughter of Alton T. and Maggie Haynie Miller of Hartwell. She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Mark Cann. Thurmon Shedd Toccoa Thurmon Shedd, 76, of Lakeside Drive, Route 2, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997. A native of Oconee County, Mr. Shedd was a son of the late William Wesley and Lillie Mae Adams Shedd. An Army veteran of World War II, he was retired after 18 years from the Stephens County Road Department and was a member of Tugalo Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Tugalo Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Westbrook officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A native of Anderson, S.C., Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late J.M. and Mary Gunter Pulliam and the widow of Lawrence Henry Barrett Sr. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Frances Thornton, and a son, Lawrence H. Barrett Jr. She was a member of Everlasting Gospel Tabernacle Church in Greenville, S.C., and retired from the textile industry. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, with the Revs. James Kent officiating. A native of Hart County, Mr. Stone was a son of the late Reuben and Fannie White Stone. He was a retired shock repairer for Monroe Auto Equipment Co. and a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe Black and Terry Meeks officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Sutherland, Army of the United States, Retired, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997. General Sutherland was born in Calhoun, Ga., Jan. 13, 1905, the son of the late Thomas O. and Martha J. Overton Sutherland. He was a graduate of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism, University of Georgia. At the University he was president of the senior class of 1929, president of Demosthenian Literary Society, winner of the Demosthenian Honor Key, a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary scholarship fraternity, Sigma Delta Chi journalism fraternity, the Gridiron Club, G Club, Scabbard and Blade Military society, Blue Key Council, ODK and the track team. He received a master's degree in English and journalism from Oglethorpe University. He was a graduate of Atlanta Law School where he was a member of Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity, and recipient of the Delta Theta Phi Scholarship Key. He taught English and history in the Mount Berry High School for Boys in 1929-30, and English and journalism at Atlanta Tech High School in 1930-37, and represented the educational department of Doubleday Doran, Inc., in seven southeastern states from June 1, 1937 to May 31, 1939. On June 1, 1939, he became City of Atlanta Personnel Director. As Atlanta's first personnel director, he inaugurated the merit system or personnel administration in lieu of the political spoils system. Under his direction city jobs and professional board election jobs were classified. A cadet major in the University of Georgia R.O.T.C., he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve May 31, 1929. He participated in the Army Reserve training program until he was called to active military service as captain in Feb. 1941. He served five years and three months during World War II, including 16 months in the European Theater of Operations, rising to the rank of colonel. After World War II he returned to his position of City of Atlanta Personnel Director in which he served until he retired in 1970. In 1947 the Army asked him to organize the 81st "Wildcat" Infantry Division in the Army Reserve in the southeastern states. He commanded the 81st until he retired from the Army Reserve June 30, 1964, as a major general. General Sutherland served as president of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States 960-61 and as a member of the executive committee of the Senior Reserve Commanders of the Army 1950-62. He was a member of the Department of Army Reserve Policy Committee 1950-61, and chairman 1958-62. He was a member of the Board of Managers of the University of Georgia Alumni Society 1950-62. He was national president of the Oglethorpe University Alumni Association, 1937-38. A member of Kiwanis International since Feb. 1941, he was president of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta 1958-59, secretary of the Georgia District of Kiwanis 1948-49, and a member of the Kiwanis Legion of Honor. He was a member of the Breakfast Club of Atlanta. He is survived by his son, Carl T. Sutherland Jr.; two grandchildren, Glen Thomas Sutherland and Amy Sutherland Nesbit, both of Augusta; a sister, Mrs. Charles R. Edens, Shannon; a brother, Roy O. Sutherland, Army of the United States, Retired, Augusta; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sutherland, the former Alma Cook Shaw, preceded General Sutherland in death in 1986. He is survived by his second wife, Mildred Bolen Sutherland. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Arlington Memorial Park with the Rev. James Sosbee officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel, Atlanta.
