A native of Jackson County, Mr. Cotton was a son of the late Willard and Robbie Savage Cotton. He was retired superintendent of the Jackson County Department of Hurricane Shoals and a Navy Seabees veteran of World War II. Mr. Cotton helped organize the first Cub Scout troop in Jefferson and coached Little League baseball and football. He was a member of Good News Christian Church, Watkinsville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Jackson Funeral Home with the Revs. Tom Plank and Jerry Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Cotton, Dennis Wright, Hollis Ray, Jimmy Sexton, Sammy Parks and George Clifton. Survivors include his wife, Janie Tolbert Cotton; two sons, Terry Cotton, Watkinsville, and Mike Cotton, Athens; and four grandchildren, Tammy Cotton, Bishop, Chris Cotton, Jefferson, and Brandi Cotton and Wendi Cotton, both of Lakeland, Fla. Lucile Rutledge Winder Lucile "Tip" Rutledge, 79, died Thursday, July 3, 1997. A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Rutledge was a daughter of the late John and Lucy Doster. She was a retired supervisor with R&R Manufacturing in Auburn. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Rary officiating. Burial will be Barrow Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her husband, James Rutledge; two sons, Jim Rutledge and Wayne Rutledge, both of California; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 2-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. J. Nolan Spear Jr. Commerce J. Nolan Spear Jr., 42, of 98 Woodland Circle died Thursday, July 3, 1997. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Spear was a son of J. Nolan and Gerry Harper Spear Sr. of Commerce. He was chief of the Commerce Volunteer Fire Department and co-owner of K&S Construction Co. He was a member of the Hall County Fire Department, the Community Banks and Trust board of directors, the Commerce Downtown Development Authority and First Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Commerce Board of Education. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Don Paulson and Ray Austin officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Vickie Hix Spear; two sons, Tre Spear and Josh Spear, both of Commerce; a brother, Gerald Spear, Commerce; and a sister, Becky Oliver, Dawson. The family is at the residence and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the local missions of First Baptist Church of Commerce or to St. Mary's Hospice. Ruby Walters Anderson, S.C. Ruby Gertrude Wentzky Walters, 82, of 1020 Providence Church Road died Thursday, July 3, 1997. A native of Anderson, S.C., Mrs. Walters was born Oct. 14, 1914. She was a daughter of the late Charley and Annie Zimmerman Wentzky and the widow of Henry Comer Walters. She was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Eugene Wentzky. She was a lifelong member of Roberts Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Annie Rainey Circle. In 1992, she was presented with honorary membership to the Presbyterian Woman of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. In 1989, in dedication of the 200th anniversary of Roberts Presbyterian Church, Ruby Walters was invited to be a committee member to assist in writing the history of her beloved church. The history book is titled "Cherished Memories - a History of Roberts Presbyterian Church 1789-1989." She was an avid gardener and in March 1997 was granted honorary lifetime membership in the Frances Vasen Garden Club. For many years, she was an active member of the Anderson County Home Demonstration Club. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Roberts Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Robert Fitler and James Latta and Dr. Edwin Cooley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a son, Wayne Glenn Walters, Anderson; a daughter, Phoebe Walters Hughes, Athens; a brother, Herman "Pete" Wentzky, Anderson; and two granddaughters, Susan Michelle Walters, Anderson, and Apryl Denise Hughes, Athens. Charles Reeves officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
