A native of Mount Kisco, N.Y., Mr. Bates was a son of Edith Coombs Bates Stevens of Pembroke Lakes, Fla., and the late William Bates. An Army veteran of the Korean conflict, he was employed with Childers Construction Co. and was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Rev. Fields Athens T.J. Fields, 82, of 205 Riverview Drive died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997. A native of Spalding County, Mr. Fields was a son of the late William D. and Amy Carver Fields and the widower of Mildred E. Fields. He retired in 1978 after 43 years from Southern Bell and was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, Mount Vernon Lodge 22 and Telephone Pioneers. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Ross Doubleday, Chesapeake, Va., and Sandra and Steve Ginn, Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Samantha Fields and Allen and Tracie Fields, all of Athens; a sister, Marion Downs, Athens; a brother, Carver Fields, Griffin; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Flemming was a daughter of the late Thomas and Emma Andrews Ginn and the widow of Union Fleming. She was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Fleming. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Baptist Church, WMU and Joy Club.
