Bowman Bogart Ben C. Bowman, 66, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Bowman was a son of the late Ben Hill and Beatrice Perkins Bowman. He graduated in 1947 from Statham High School, and was the Georgia state FFA president in 1947 and 1948. He spent two years in the U.S. Army in the 628th Tank Battalion in Germany. In 1954, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering. He was employed by Ralston Purina Mills for 36 years, and was the director of manufacturing for the western region before retiring in 1990. He was a member of First Christian Church of Winder. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. John Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Dean Bowman; five sons, David Bowman, N.J., Jeffrey Bowman, Greensboro, N.C., John Bowman, Houston,T.X., Robert Bowman, Statham, and Edward Bowman, Cincinnati, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Winder or the Clarke County Cancer Society. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-6 p.m. today. Smith Funeral Home, Winder, is in charge of arrangements. Lisa Brown Lavonia Lisa Anne Chastain Brown, 33, of 93B Ridgewood Hills, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997. A native of Franklin County, she was a daughter of Bettie Lou Goodwin of Royston and Steve Chastain of Lavonia. She was a secretary and a textile worker at the TNS Mills. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Ginn Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Harbin Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens. In addition to her father and mother, survivors include her step-mother, Debby Hornick Chastain, Lavonia; her husband, Gregory Leon Brown, Lavonia; a son, Brandon Lee Brown, Lavonia; a daughter, Jessica Landy Brown, Lavonia; and a sister, Debbie Chastain Headen, Martin. The body is at Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville. The family is at the residence of her father, Steve Chastain, 280 Gumlog Road. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today. William Steele Carlton William Claude Steele, 84, of Rt. 2 Box 555, died Friday, Oct 3, 1997. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Steele was a son of the late William Milton and Martha Della Harris Steele. He farmed for much of his life and later worked in a quarry before retiring in 1975. He was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Sandy Cross Baptist Church, with the Revs. Terry James and Clayton Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Steele; a son, William Kerry Steele, Winterville; two sisters, Mae Burt and Sadie Cox, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be the deacons of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. Lord & Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel, Crawford, is in charge of arrangements. Mary Whitfield Jefferson Mary Elizabeth Whitfield, 71, of 856 Athens St., died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Whitfield was a daughter of the late Hubert O. and Mary Bell Hooper Lyle. She was the manager of the Jackson County Housing Authority and a member of Galilee Christian Church, Jefferson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Galilee Christian Church, with the Minister Tom Plank officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Eugene Whitfield; four sons, Jeff Whitfield, Dothan, Ala., Ron Whitfield, Springfield, Tenn.; Tim Whitfield, Macon; and Ray Whitfield, Winterville; two sisters, Martha McEver, Talmo, and Judy Sailors, Jefferson; and seven grandchildren.
