He was a retired poultry farmer and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. She attended Georgia Southwestern College and the University of Georgia, graduated from Oglethorpe University and received her master's degree from Mercer University. She taught high school English and literature. She was a member of the Literacy Club, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Order of the Eastern Star, the Federated Garden Club, the Georgia Education Association and the National Education Association, and was a Lady Moose for several years.
