A native of Franklin County, Mr. Brawner was a son of the late John L. and Callie Watson Brawner. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a construction worker, a farmer and a member of Middle River Baptist Church. He was the last member of his immediate family. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Middle River Baptist Church with the Revs. Truitt Brawner, Paul Jameson and C. Roy Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Survivors include two aunts, Grace Bellamy and Hattie Brawner, both of the home, and several cousins. The family is at the residence. Ginn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Eleanor Buchanan Elberton Eleanor Rucker Buchanan of 2481 Hal Rucker Drive died Monday, Sept. 8, 1997. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Buchanan was a daughter of the late J. Hal and Lillian Burriss Rucker and the widow of Howard Jasper "Jack" Buchanan. She was a retired bank employee and was active in the Association for the Advancement of Retired People. She performed volunteer work and was a Pink Lady at Elbert Memorial Hospital, a member of Elberton First Presbyterian Church and Women's Circle of the Church. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Elmhurst Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Eberhardt officiating. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Nancy Buchanan, Dunwoody; three sisters, Hazel Fellows, Decatur, Bessie Mae Cleveland, Elberton, and Carolyn Richardson, Tucker; and a brother, Walter H. Rucker, Conley. The family is at the residence. A native of Hancock County, Mr. Ferguson was a son of the late George Frank and Missouri Bolton Ferguson. He was owner and operator of Ferguson's Barbers Creek Grocery and was a member of Friendship Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Friendship Christian Church. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville. Ruthie Thompson Toccoa Ruthie Mae Thompson, 88, of Route 2, Red Bluff Road died Monday, Sept. 8, 1997. A native of Stephens County, Miss Thompson was a daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Jane Jarrett Thompson. She was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church, Madison. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Baptist Church, Madison, S.C., with the Rev. James Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a son, James C. Thompson, Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Christine Thompson, Toccoa; two brothers, Mack Thompson, Toccoa, and Simpson Thompson, Neptune, N.J.; and two grandchildren. Lois Williams Athens Lois Tallulah Burton Williams, 84, of Franklin Street died Sept. 9, 1997, at home. A native of Athens, Mrs. Williams was the widow of George S. Williams Jr. and the daughter of the late Horatio "Rache" Bell Burton and Laura McElreath Burton Hendrickson. Bertram H. Hendrickson was her stepfather. Survivors include a daughter and a son, Laura W. Carter, Winterville, and George "Chip" S. Williams III, Athens; a daughter-in-law, Jill Flintom Williams; a son-in-law, Charles Carter; two grandsons, Todd and Ben Williams; a stepsister, Roseanne Hendrickson von Herrmann, Columbia, S.C., and her two sons. Mrs. Williams graduated from Lucy Cobb Elementary School, the former Athens High School, and returned to Lucy Cobb for two years of college before enrolling in the University of Georgia. She received an AB Journalism degree in 1934. Mrs. Williams worked for a year with the former Athens Daily Times before accepting a position as editor of the Georgia Education Journal. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she applied for Officer Candidate School with the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and was accepted for the fifth officer class at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, where she remained on assignment to the public relations office for one year. While there she was technical adviser to a WAAC recruiting film "Women At War." Later she served as public relations officer at air force bases in Reno, Nev., and Great Falls, Mont., until assigned to Fairfield-Suisun Air Base, Calif., to assist with staging the first WAC company to be transferred to the Pacific Theatre. She remained at Hickman Field, Honolulu, until the Japanese surrender in 1945. After the war, she married George Williams. Upon their return to Athens, they bought a farm and he taught at Athens High School until his death in 1972. Mrs. Williams was active in the Gaines Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) during the '50s and early '60s and the Clarke County Junior High School PTA. In addition to farming, she worked at the UGA Institute of Government and began work at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education when it opened. She was very active in the community including memberships with Friends of Lucy Cobb Institute, Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, Delta Gamma Fraternity and was a volunteer for Recording for the Blind. A memorial service will be held at the Day Chapel, State Botanical Garden of Georgia, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997. Father Ralph Marsh will officiate.
