He was an employee of the Clarke County school system and a member of Oconee Baptist Church, Stephens. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with the Revs. Abraham Mosley and Hoyt Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Jacob M. Melvin Jr. Jefferson Jacob Marshall Melvin Jr., 87, of 120 Lawrenceville Ave. died Thursday, July 10. Born in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Melvin was a resident of Jefferson for 51 years. He was a son of the late Emma Jane Brennaman Melvin and Jacob Marshall Melvin Sr. and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Francis Turner Melvin. Mr. Melvin was associated with the First National Bank of Jefferson for 32 years and served as its president and chairman of the board. He owned the Firestone store in Commerce for more than 20 years. He was a lifetime Presbyterian and loyal member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson for 51 years. During that time he served as Sunday school teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school and elder of the session. His many years of service to the Jefferson and Jackson County community include: board member of the Jefferson city school system; avid and longtime supporter of the Jefferson High School band; former member of Rotary and the Lions Club; and member of the executive committee of the Northeast Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Melvin was a Mason for 63 years and a member of the Yarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta for more than 50 years. He was a dedicated musician and played in the shrine band. Hudgens. She was the former owner and operator of Stonecypher's Coffee House and Cafe and Stonecypher's Boarding House, and a former operator of the Lavonia Motel.
