Burton Elberton Minnie D. Burton, 83, of 1151 Oglesby Blvd. died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997. Mrs. Burton was a daughter of the late Marie Fortson and James Morrison and the widow of Henry Burton. She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Harper, Larry Montgomery and Checo Stowers officiating. Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. katharine crane CRANE Katharine Crane Beech Haven Katharine Rowland Crane, 101, of Willowynde died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997. Katharine was born in Athens to Charles and Effie Rowland on March 22, 1896. She attended public schools in Athens and the Lucy Cobb Institute. At the end of her studies she traveled around the world with her father visiting western Europe, pre-Communist Russia and Asia. In 1915 she married the Rev. Paul S. Crane, with whom she served in the Presbyterian Mission in Korea for about two years. Before going to Korea, they had their first child, Effie Crane. While in the mission field she gave birth to her second child, Paul E. Crane. Katharine and the children were forced to return to Athens when her husband Paul was killed in an automobile accident. In 1922 Katharine married William Earl Crane, the brother of Paul Crane. The Cranes then went to Richmond Seminary in Virginia where Katharine was enrolled in Richmond's Assembly Training School. In 1924 Katharine and Bill had a daughter, Katharine Crane Ross. The Cranes served in the Presbyterian Churches of Guntersville, Ala.; Porterdale, Ga..; Atlanta; Charleston, W. Va.; and Knoxville, Tenn. After retiring from the ministry in 1960 the Cranes returned to their home, Willowynde, Beech Haven. However, soon Katharine and Bill founded the Pastoral Counseling Center and built Brookside, Beech Haven, which they operated until the 1970s when they again retired. During their retirement years Katharine and Bill began making pastoral visits to shut-ins and hospitalized members of The First Presbyterian Church of Athens. They continued this work until the early 1980s. All during her life, Katharine was an avid painter and was exhibiting her work as late as 1992. Mrs. Crane was well known in the Athens area restaurants where she and her daughter had their lunch, a daily tradition she carried on up through this September. There will be an internment service on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. at Oconee Hills Cemetery and a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of Friendship Presbyterian Church. The family welcomes friends immediately after the service in the Hearth Room of the church. Survivors include her sister, Alice Rowland Jacobs of Athens; daughters Effie Rule of Knoxville, Tenn., and Katharine Ross of Athens; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Philip Neugebauer Sr. Madison Philip Donald Neugebauer Sr., 67, of 805 Parklane, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997. A native of Manchester, N.H., Mr. Neugebauer was a son of Aline Auger of Bedford, N.H., and the late Victor Albert Neugebauer. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a degree in forestry and wildlife and received a degree in pharmacy at the University of Georgia.
