A native of Hart County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late John and Hattie Chester Brown. He was a member of Hartwell First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mack's Funeral Home, Hartwell, with the Rev. Mozell Martin officiating. Burial will be in Sanders Grove Church Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Lola Mayfield; four daughters, Betty R. Hill, Frances Rucker and Diane Rucker, all of Hartwell, and Ladonna Brown, Chicago; four sisters, Macie Norman, Taylor, S.C., Berta Jenks, Greenville, S.C., Mamie Jones, Hartwell, and Ruth Brown, Atlanta; and a grandchild. The family is at the residence of Betty Hill, 511 N. Forest Ave., Hartwell. Thurston Childers Comer James Thurston Childers, 81, of Route 2., Box 510-A, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997. A native of Madison County, Mr. Childers was a son of the late Sweet Miles and Clara Jane Benton Childers. He was a retired cotton mill supervisor. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vineyards Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Coile officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Gladys G. Childers; two sons, Jimmy T. Childers, Comer, and Johnny T. Mattie Macomson Cochran, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997. A native of Carnesville, Mrs. Cochran was a daughter of the late Rev. Samuel and Mary Ella Atkinson and the widow of Aaron Cochran. She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Liberty Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Davison and Roger McCoy and Clarence Davis officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens. Freeman Jr. of 71 Alberta Drive died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997. A native of Madison County, Mr. Freeman was a retired steel worker and an employee of the Madison County School System, Seaboard Farms and Mack and Payne Funeral Home. A native of the Republic of Panama, Mrs. Gaines was a daughter of the late Edocia Gaitan Peralta. She was an employee of Coronet Carpet Co. in Gainesville and was of the Catholic faith. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pond Fork Baptist Church, Talmo, with the Revs. Johnny Knight and Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Creek Church Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Mack Gaines; a daughter, Christina Gaines, Jefferson; a son, James W. Gaines, Jefferson; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Jackson Funeral Home. Edward Simmons Athens Edward Simmons, 88, of 1116 Oak Grove Road died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997. Mr. Simmons was a son of the late Will "Hick" and Betty Lue Nowell Simmons. A World War II veteran, Mr. Simmons worked for the Clarke County School District and was retired from the Council on Aging. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Baptist Church with the Rev. H.L. Dotson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Bernice F. Simmons; a daughter, Edwina Stevens, Athens; a son, Walter Simmons, Athens; a sister, Lucille Griffeth, Athens; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. The family is at the residence. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Vandiver was a son of the late William Enoch and Effie Thomas Vandiver. He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Vandiver.
