Dr. Donald C. Scott Athens Dr. Donald C. Scott, Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Georgia, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997. Donald Charles Scott, a son of Donald Power Scott and Hilda Volland Scott, was born in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 1920. He obtained his bachelor of science degree in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1942 and his doctorate in zoology from Indiana University in 1947. He joined the faculty of the University of Georgia in 1947 and remained there until retiring in 1981. Dr. Scott served as chairman of the Division of Biological Sciences from 1967-72, and then returned to doing the things he liked best: teaching, advising and field work. Many of Dr. Scott's scientific publications were about stream ecology and fish. In 1971, he and M.D. Dahlberg published "The Freshwater Fishes of Georgia," regarded by many as a classic. Two species have been named after Dr. Scott: the Cherokee darter, Etheostoma scotti, and a stonefly, Pteronarcys scotti. The University of Georgia Ichthyology Collection in the Museum of Natural History is also named in his honor. Dr. Scott was elected to two honorary scientific societies, Phi Sigma and Sigma Xi. He served on Sigma Xi's national executive board from 1970-73. He was a member of a number of scientific societies, including the American Fisheries Society, the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. Dr. Scott was also a charter member of the Society of for the Protection of Old Fishes (SPOOF). Dr. Scott's professional accomplishments were many. He played a key role in persuading R.J. Reynolds Jr. to establish and support the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, which has since gained international reputation for its work on salt marsh ecology. He served on the Marine Institute's Scientific Advisory Board from 1954-66, and chaired it, 1957-64 and 1965-66. Dr. Scott worked for the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., from 1964-65. He later helped secure a six million dollar science development grant, which included funds to start the University of Georgia's Institute of Ecology. Dr. Scott's commitment to the environment extended beyond his professional interests. He was actively involved in the protection of Georgia's natural areas and the promotion of environmental education. He served on the Georgia Natural Areas Council from 1966-71 and chaired it from 1969-71. Gov. Carter appointed him to the Georgia Heritage Trust Advisory Commission in 1972. Both the Natural Areas Council and the Heritage Trust Commission were instrumental in adding many outstanding natural areas to Georgia's public lands. He also chaired the board of trustees of The Georgia Conservancy in 1972-73 and serves as a board member for almost two decades. He worked to make sure that the Conservancy's advocacy positions were based on sound scientific evidence. He was a founding member of the Northeast Georgia Nature Center -- now the Sandy Creek Nature Center -- and served as its president in 1976. He also served on the board of trustees of the Highlands Biological Station and was president of the Highland Biological Foundation in 1976-77. In 1987, Gov. Joe Frank Harris awarded Dr. Scott the "Governor's Award for Excellence in Wildlife Conservation Stewardship," recognizing his "outstanding achievement in promoting effective management of Georgia's wildlife resources." Surviving him are his wife, Lois Gish Scott; five children, Laurie A. Scott, Jane S. Boyd and Donna O. Scott, all of Athens, Karl A. Scott, Madison, and Ann S. Ellis, Bowman; four grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth S. Bilbrough, San Antonio, Texas; and two nieces, Louise Duran, San Antonio, Texas, and Carol Bilbrough, Boulder, Colo.
