A native of Barrow County, she was a daughter of Jay McDaniel of Winder and Rebecca Walden McDaniel of Rome. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wise-Connolly Funeral Home. In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband, Steven Garner; a daughter, Heather Garner, Winder; a son, Steven Garner Jr., Winder; a brother, Taylor McDaniel, Winder; and three sisters, Darlene McDaniel, Winder, Nora Adams, Chestnut Mountain, and Sabrina McDaniel, Rome. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today . Ray Matthews Watkinsville Ray Matthews, 72, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997. A native of Oconee County, he was a son of the late Curtis Matthews and Lois Aiken Matthews. A retired farmer, he was a member and deacon of Bishop Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bishop Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Holmes officiating. The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in Bearden Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mattie Lord Matthews; a daughter, Gloria Matthews, Watkinsville; a son, Darryl Matthews, Watkinsville; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Bishop Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 9, Bishop, Ga., 30621. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Arthur Bowick's Oconee Chapel, Watkinsville. Devene Thurmond Commerce Devene Thurmond, 70, of 3552 Ila Road, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997. A native of Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Horace and Willie Hix Fitzpatrick, and the widow of the late Floyd Thurmond. She was preceded in death by a son, Lamar Thurmond. She was formerly employed as a librarian. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Ivie Funeral Home, with the Rev. Peter Starr officiating. Burial will be in the Hix Family Cemetery, Commerce. Survivors include a stepson, Sam Thurmond, Banks County, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Linda Hendrix, Commerce; two daughters, Melanie Johnson, Norcross, and Anne Thurmond, Commerce; a brother, Royce Brown, Commerce; and three grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Waggoner Covington Elizabeth B. Waggoner, 94, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Waggoner was a daughter of the late Ollie and Ella Estes Benton. She worked for Smith-Morcock Insurance Agency for 20 years. She was a member of Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron twice. Mrs. Waggoner was a member and past president of Newton General Hospital Auxiliary, and a member and past president of the Covington Woman's Club. She was a member of Covington First United Methodist Church. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at Covington First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Don Martin and the Revs. Royeese Stowe and James Sanders officiating. Burial was in the Colbert City Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Pound, Covington; two sisters, Agnes LaFave, Fayetteville, and Addie Lee Applebee, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. Lillie Bell Wheeler Toccoa Lillie Bell Wheeler, 71, of 438 Hughes St., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997. A native of Greene County, Mrs. Wheeler was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Weaver and Virgiaes Ruff. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Friendship Baptist Church, Toccoa, with the Pastor Karl Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Toccoa City Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Wardell Wheeler; two daughters, Alicia Wheeler and Rusena Anderson, both of Atlanta; four sons, James Michael Wheeler and Patrick Wheeler, both of Atlanta, and Gartrell Wheeler and Wardell Wheeler Jr., both of Toccoa; seven sisters, Nancy Bell Scott, Philadelphia, Penn.; Hattie Kay Burton, Blanche Asbury and Virgiaes Juanita Hatchell, all of Toccoa, Carolyn Lucille Ruff, Cincinnati, Ohio, Mary Leaks, Atlanta, and Charlotte Weaver Taylor, Cleveland, Ohio; a brother, John Aubrey Ruff, N.Y.; and 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The body is at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today. The family is at the residence. Ray Williamson Jefferson Ray Williamson, 87, of 2131 Washington St., died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997. A native of White County, Mr. Williamson was the widower of the late Nell Bennett Williamson. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Williamson. He was retired from the textile industry, and was a member of Academy Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Faith Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Gerald Mitton officiating. Survivors include a brother, Claude Williamson, Lula. Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, is in charge of arrangements. Latrell Hutchinson Cincinnati Latrell Hutchinson, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997.
