"Pete" Dickens, 88, of 1011 Pete Dickens Road died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997. A lifelong resident of Oconee County, Mr. Dickens was a son of the late J. Tom and Olivia Malcolm Dickens and was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Sims. He was a farmer and longtime owner of Pete Dickens Lake and a former Oconee County commissioner and School Board member. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bogart. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, West, with the Revs. Bill Hayes and Randy Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Nina Crowe Dickens; two daughters, Betty Felder and Shirley Jones, both of Bogart; a son, Pete Dickens Jr., Athens; four sisters, Olivia Thomas, Bishop, Myrtle Comer, Seagrove Beach, Fla., and Ruth Crowe and Doris Caldwell, both of Bogart; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bogart. Miles Ellis Greensboro Miles "Boote" Ellis, 75, of 1430 W. Broad St. died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997. A native of Greene County, Mr. Ellis was a retired police officer. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board and was a Sunday school teacher. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. S.L. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Canaan Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ellis; and three brothers, Robert L. Ellis, New York, and Hillmon Ellis and Frank G. Ellis, both of Greensboro. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. today at Norrington Funeral Home. Chuck Hawks Colbert Lambert Eugene "Chuck" Hawks Jr., 27, of Route 2, Box 191, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Hawks was a son of Pat Fail Hawks of Colbert and the late Lambert Eugene Hawks. He was a painter and a member of Moons Grove Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Lee officiating. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a sister, Jennifer Marie Barnett, Colbert; and a half brother, Ralph Whithead, Athens. The family is at the residence and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville. Vera L. Kahkonen Jackson Vera L. Kahkonen, 68, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997. A native of Dooley County, Mrs. Kahkonen was a daughter of the late Walter M. and Tannie Lupo Barfield. She was a homemaker. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Hayes Ledbetter officiating. Survivors include her husband, Arthur Kahkonen; two sons, Timothy C. Louise Massey Cornelia Louise Gailey Massey, 85, of 135 Etta St. died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Massey was a daughter of the late Claude and Woodie McDonald Gailey. She was a retired payroll clerk and had worked for Carwood Manufacturing and Yonah Packaging Co. She was a member of Cornelia First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Volunteer Sunday school class. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cornelia First Baptist Church with Dr. T. A native of Clarke County, Ms. McKissick was a daughter of the late Robert and Seebell Thomas. She lived most of her life in Oconee County. Survivors include an aunt, Florence Crawford, Philadelphia; and cousins. Gladys Montgomery Athens Gladys Day Anderson Montgomery, 93, of 160 Rock Glen Road died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997. Mrs. Montgomery was the oldest child of the late T.B. and Lucy Glovier Anderson of Athens. She spent the past 50 years in Athens and was a homemaker. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship with the Rev. Terrell Balof officiating.
