Rice Elberton Chester Buford Rice, 74, of 1955 Lincolnton Highway died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997. A native of Elbert County, Mr. Rice was a son of the late Orion E. and Frances Johnson Rice. John F. Stegeman Athens Dr. John Foster Stegeman, 78, of 120 Greenbriar Court died Sunday, Jan. 19, 1997. A native of Gulfport, Miss., Dr. Stegeman was a son of the late Herman J. and Dorothea Washburne Stegeman. A graduate of Athens High School, he attended Woodberry Forest, where he was awarded the school's highest honor, the Archer Christian Memorial Medal for character, leadership and athletic achievement. Dr. Stegeman graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a starting end on the 1939 football team and received letters in basketball and freshman track. He later received a nomination for Sports Illustrated's Silver Anniversary All-American football team. He completed his medical degree in 1943 at Emory University School of Medicine and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor fraternity. Dr. Stegeman served residencies at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, and Lawson Veterans Administration Hospital, Chamblee. A veteran of World War II, he served as a medical officer in the Army Medical Corps, where he earned the rank of captain. In 1949, he established his medical practice in Athens and served terms as chief of staff for St. Mary's and Athens General hospitals. He was president of the Crawford W. Long Medical Society and a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and received a citation from the Medical Association of Georgia for 50 years of service in the medical field. He was a member of UGA's College of Pharmacy faculty for 13 years, having taught pharmacology and therapeutics. He was the author of more than 60 articles in local, regional and national periodicals and four books, including "These Men She Gave," a best-seller, "Ghosts of Herty Field," "Touchdown," co-authored by Robert M. Willingham, and "Caty," a biography co-authored by his wife. At the time of his death, he was completing a biography of his father, coach Herman J. Stegeman. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bridges Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Janet Allais Stegeman; a son, Herman J.
