A native of Wilkes County, Mr. Banks was a son of the late John and Laura Bankston. He was a cement finisher with Vandiver Construction Company and a member of Lyonsville Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at noon Friday at Lyonsville Baptist Church, Rayle, with the Rev. B.Z. Daniel officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Survivors include wife Mattie Lou Bankston; three daughters, Ann F. Bankston and Carolyn B. Sheppard, both of Athens, and Catherine Bankston, Landover, Md.; five sons, Joe L. Bankston, John L. Bankston and Anthony Bankston, all of Athens, and Willie Robert Bankston and Jimmy Bankston, both of Landover, Md.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews. Winfrey's Mutual Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Philip Bergeaux Sr. Athens Philip Bergeaux Sr., 79, of 125 Sharon Circle died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997. A native of Elton, La., Mr. Bergeaux lived in Athens for 42 years. He was an agronomist with the University of Georgia Agriculture Extension Service and a Navy lieutenant commander, serving in both the Pacific and European during World War II, during 1940-45. He was ship's captain of the LST-276 and ARST-#1, a Pearl Harbor survivor and a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was of the Catholic faith. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Lakin officiating. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Bergeaux; a daughter, Lois B. Phelps, Tullahoma, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Andrew Phelps, Nathaniel Phelps and Joseph Phelps, all of Tullahoma, Tenn. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Sam Brewer Comer Samuel Arthur Brewer, 84, of 2058 Comer Road died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Brewer was a son of the late George Washington and Emma Whitehead Brewer. He was a farmer, retired from Huggins Auto Parts in Athens, and a member of Welcome Avenue Congregational Holiness Church. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Welcome Avenue Congregational Holiness Church with the Rev. Carl Herring officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Brewer; a son, Vernon Ray Brewer, Comer; a brother, Andrew Jack Brewer, Atlanta; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Mildred Eubanks Commerce Mildred Ramelle Lacey Eubanks, 76, of 445 Scott St. died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Eubanks was a daughter of the late Otis and Mae Belle Kitchens Lacey and the widow of L.J. Eubanks. She was retired from the poultry science department of the University of Georgia and a member of First Baptist Church of Commerce. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little-Ward Funeral Home. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Survivors include two daughters, LeAndra Argo, Hiram, and Ramelle Rearden, Cartersville; a son, David Standridge, Commerce; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Franklin, 92, of 24 Dove Power Road died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Franklin was a daughter of the late Wes and Emma Carithers Childers and the widow of Oscar Franklin. She was a member of Clouds Creek Baptist Church and was retired from Colbert Manufacturing, where she worked as a seamstress. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lord & Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel, Crawford, with the Revs. John Parker and Mark Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Collier Baptist Church Cemetery. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she served as president of the choir for many years. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev.
