An Air Force veteran of World War II, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a former administrative board member and chairman, a member of the choir, a teacher of the Curtis Wesley Sunday school class, a Sunday school superintendent, a lay leader and a former member of the finance committee. He was a member of Toccoa Lions Club and served as sight conservation chairman for 15 years. He also served as chairman of Boy Scout Troop 77 and was a member of Toccoa Masonic Lodge, the Men's Club and the Monday Morning Breakfast Club.
