Smith Bennett, 64, of 2821 Washington Highway, Union Point, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997. A native of Union Point, Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of the late Dave Smith and Annie Woodfin Smith. She was a member of the Randolph Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board and the Mother Board. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Randolph Baptist Church with the Rev. James H. Battle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at the church at 1 p.m. Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Bennett, Valerie Bennett, and Deborah Bennett, all of Union Point; a son, David Bennett, Union Point; two sisters, Susan Clark and Christine Blakely, Philadelphia, Pa.; four brothers, Alfred Smith, Union Point, Ruben Smith, St. Petersburg Fla., Dave Smith and Plee Smith, Philadelphia, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Philip Bergeaux Sr. Athens Dr. Philip (Jim) Bergeaux Sr., 79, of 125 Sharon Circle died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997. A native of Elton, La., Dr. Bergeaux lived in Athens for 42 years. He was an agronomist with the University of Georgia Agriculture Extension Service and a Navy lieutenant commander, serving in both the Pacific and European during World War II, during 1940-45. He was ship's captain of the LST-276 and ARST-#1, a Pearl Harbor survivor and a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was of the Catholic faith. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Lakin officiating. Survivors include his wife, Arlene Bergeaux; a daughter, Lois B. Phelps, Tullahoma, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Andrew Phelps, Nathaniel Phelps and Joseph Phelps, all of Tullahoma, Tenn. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Cecil Callahan Lula Cecil Kelly Callahan, 28, of Mt. Sinai Road, Lula, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997. A native of Fulton County, Mr. Kelly was the son of Tony and Lenita Tweedell Callahan of Lula. He was a graduate of Russell High School in East Point. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and was employed by the Hall County Humane Society. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Carroll Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Kristi Hinely and Casey Sheridan, and a brother Todd Callahan, all of Lula. John Fischer Sr. Madison John David Fischer Sr., 57, of 1734 Four Lakes Drive died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997. A native of Covington, Ky., Mr. Fischer was a son of Dorothy Haupt Fischer of East Ridge, Tenn. and the late Vincent J. Fischer. He was the vice president of the turf division of Pennington Seed Company. Funeral services will be at at 2 p.m. today at the Church of the Advent. Burial will be in Morgan Memorial Park. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Phyllis Swann Fischer, Madison; two sons, David Fischer Jr., Lawrenceville and Scott Fischer, Conyers; two brothers, Jim Fischer, Charlotte, N.C. and Barry Fischer, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and nieces and nephews. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Gunter was a daughter of the late Allen T. Boles and Eliza Young Boles. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Frances Asbury United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Daniel officiating. Survivors include her husband, Leon Gunter; a daughter, Patsy McMath, Albany; a son, Tommy Gunter, New Orleans; a brother, Billy Boles, Elberton; a half brother, Vernon Boles, North Carolina; and six grandchildren. Fred Henry Hunter Jr. of 1557 Florence Avenue, Evanston Ill., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997. A native of Evanston, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Fred Henry and Florence Harvey Hunter, formerly of Athens. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29 at the New Bethel Baptist Church, Evanston, Ill. Mary B. Johnson Toccoa Mary Worth Bowers Johnson, 81, of Toccoa, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997. A native of Habersham County, Mrs. Johnson resided for the greater part of her life in Toccoa and Stephens County. She was the daughter of the late David A. and Matilda Davis Bowers. She was a member of Old Toccoa Baptist Church where she served as a pianist for a number of years and was also the manager of the senior citizens of the church. Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with Revs. Roger Elrod and Frank Bearden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Kell was a daughter of the late John and Ellen Turner Haney and the widow of Clyde Head, who passed away in 1950 and Frank Kell, who passed away in 1969. She was employed by Capps Cotton Mill for a number of years, and later worked for Wright Manufacturing Company. She was of the Baptist faith. Oglesby of Hartwell, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997. Funeral services will be Sunday, Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. at Mack's Funeral Home, Hartwell, with Rev. Richard Forston officiating. The family is at the home of Josephine Hunter, 191 Zion Church Road, Hartwell. Georgia Pope Bogart Georgia Lee Moore Pope, 85, of 312 Osceola Ave., Bogart, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997. Mrs. Pope, a native of Elbert County, was a daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Cornelia Vaughn Moore. She was a retired seamstress at Wright Garment Company in Bowman and a member of Bogart Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Dewy Rose Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Parker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Vera and John Gear, Bogart; a sister, Vera M. Campbell, Gaithersburg, Md.; a brother, Henry C. Moore, Sanford, Fla.; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Rick and Dianne Gear, Bogart; a granddaughter, Suzette Hires, Asheville, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, David Hires and Chelsea and Samantha Gear, all of Bogart. Sam Vaughn Jr. Bowersville Sam Vaughn Jr., 84, of 100 Midnight Drive, Bowersville, died Friday, Dec. 26. Mr. Vaughn was the widower of Louise Gaines Vaughn. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. David Weaver, 48, of Lancaster, Calif. died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Weaver was a son of the late Ruebun and Ruby Robinson Weaver.
