Brank, 79, of 1660 Jennings Mill Road Number 303, Bogart, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997. A native of Democrat, N.C., Mrs. Brank was the daughter of the late Samuel Horis and Merkie Roberts Carter and the widow of Hugh T. Brank. She had lived in Bogart for the last 18 months. She was a retied school teacher and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C. She was also a member of Kappa Kappa Iota, the Gardendale Garden Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 2, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C. Graveside services will also be Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Ashlawn Gardens of Memory in Weaverville, N.C. with the Rev. John Hopkins officiating. Survivors include one son, H. Carter Brank, Watkinsville; a niece and a nephew. Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, West, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beech Haven Baptist Church. Edith Pittman Hutchins Cox Athens Edith Pittman Hutchins Cox of Athens died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the age of 95. Mrs. Cox was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 14, 1902. She was the second child of Dr. and Mrs. John Green Pittman. The family later moved to Gaffney, S.C. where they resided and served their community. There were three sons and one daughter. Two sons followed their father's profession. The youngest son was an attorney. She attended Gaffney High School and graduated with highest honors, serving as valedictorian of her class. She then attended the Lucy Cobb Institute in Athens, a finishing school for young ladies of that day. She met and married Joshua Cornelius Hutchins, the nephew of Miss Millie Rutherford, the head mistress of the Lucy Cobb Institute. The marriage took place at the summer home of Mrs. Lamar Lipscomb in Lakemont. After the death of Jake Hutchins in April, 1940, Edith served as vice-president of Hutchins-Cox Insurance and Real Estate Agency and was the only female general agent of Hartford Insurance Agency in the United States. She married Julian Cox, Sr., in 1944. They moved to Chambersburg, Pa., and Washington, D.C., where he served as a captain in the U.S. Army. After World War II, they returned to Athens where he headed the firm now known as Hutchins-Cox-Stroud and Pierson. In her early sixties, she worked for four years as a nurses aide at the hospital now known as Athens Regional Medical Center. While there, she was instrumental in obtaining higher wages and better hours for the nurses. During this same period, Julian was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served three terms. After her husband's death, Edith stayed for a period in her home on Cloverhurst Avenue and later moved to Moore Retirement Home in Madison, Ga., where she created a home away from home with her colorful decorations from the home on Cloverhurst. She remained active in the Y.W.C.O in Athens, swimming twice a week until her 95th birthday, which she celebrated with her friends in November at the Athens Country Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Bryant, Okeechobee, Fla.; one son, Jake Hutchins and his wife, Gail Marsden Hutchins, Athens; three grandchildren, Ann Marie Bryant McNair, Black Mountain, N.C., Laura Rutherford Hutchins Conliff, Richmond Hill, Ga., and Joshua C. Hutchins, Johnson City, Tenn.; one granddaughter-in-law, Virginia Bryant, Okeechobee, Fla.; four great-granddaughters, two great-great-granddaughters and one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Glover Bryant, III. Funeral services will be held at Bridges Funeral Home Chapel, Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 at 11 a.m. Dr. John Appleton will officiate. A private burial will follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday starting at 10 a.m. until the service. Thelma Casey Canon Thelma Casey Casey, 88, of 1552 Casey Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Casey was the daughter of the late Lee and Winnie Allen Casey and the widow of Lamar "Tip" Casey. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Gaines Chapel United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at Gaines Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Merritt Waters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cousins will serve as pallbearers. Estelle Norton Galloway Homer Estelle Norton Galloway, 84, of Galloway Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Galloway was the daughter of the late Nero and Dora Brady Norton and the widow of the Roy Lamar Galloway Sr. She was a homemaker and a member of the Leatherwood Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at the Leatherwood Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Franklin and Stanley Westmoreland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Franklin County, she was the daughter of Ira Lee Brown Fortson, Royston, and the late H.D. Fortson. She was a budget officer for the U.S. Department of Defense. She was a member of New Hope Congregational Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Faye and Sylvia Fortson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at New Hope Congregational Holiness Church eith the Revs. Dennis Kesler and Jonathan Randall officiating. A native of Macon County, N.C., Mr. Holland was the son of Claude Holland, Cullowee, N.C., and the late Britta Lee Tilley Holland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a division manager for the circulation department of the Atlanta Journal for 27 years. A native of Lavonia, Mr. Minyard was the son of the late Auza Judson and Buna Vista Robinson Minyard. He owned Quality Cadillac-Oldsmobile in Greer, S.C. for 30 years. He as a World War II veteran, serving in the invasion of Normandy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Judson T. Minyard. A native of Molena, Mrs. Puckett the daughter of the late John Clinton and Ella Hill Bennett and the widow of James Louis Puckett. She was a member of Cornelia United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. A native of Madison County, Mr. Yarbrough was the son of the late John Groves and Nettie Hart Yarbrough. He was retired from Vend and Company and had also been employed with University Chevrolet. Mr. Yarbrough was a member of Hull Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and the Sunday School secretary for many years. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Y. Thompson, Lounette Y. Brown and Joan Y. Melton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 2, 1998, at Hull Baptist Church. The Rev. Randy Crowe will officiate. Internment will be in Hull Baptist Church Cemetery.
