Alexander Athens Elizabeth Almand Alexander, 83, of 180 Valley Road, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. A native of Conyers, Mrs. Alexander was a daughter of the late W.A. and Alma Brooks Almand. She was a teacher, assistant librarian and a homemaker. She attended Middle Georgia College and Georgia Women's College. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens, University Women's Club and the Bobbin Mill Garden Club. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Athens. Dr. Jon Appleton will officiate. Private burial will be at Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, W.R. Alexander; three sons, W.R. Alexander III, Sumter, S.C., Roger A. Alexander, Lake Toxaway, N.C., and Joe Brooks Alexander, Fuquay Varina, N.C.; a sister, Nell Cobb, Anniston, Ala.; three brothers, Hubert C. Almand, Lawrenceville, Felton Almand, Lee, Fla., and Paul Almand, Deland, Fla.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers will be Gene Winburn, Malcolm Skinner, Joal Giddens, Buddy Snow, Edd Gulley, and Carl Thrift. Honorary pallbearers will be the Dorcas Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Athens and the B&P Sunday School Class. Bridges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Curtis Coile Crawford Curtis Edmond "Papa Curtis" Coile, 68, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Coile was a son of Thelma Hall Coile, Crawford, and the late Edmond D. Coile. Mr. Coile owned and operated Coile's Food Market in Crawford for 18 years. He was a member of Lexington Masonic Lodge No. 158, had served on the board of directors of Commercial Bank, was an ordained deacon and was a member of Lexington Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home East. The Revs. Harry Warren, Herman Purcell, Dayton Logan and Mark Fite will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Rachel K. Coile; a daughter, Deborah Coile Wier, Augusta; a son, Rick Coile, Nicholson; three sisters, Nell Walls, Augusta, Margaret Paradise, Crawford, and Gloria Peterman, Stephens; a brother, James H. Franklin Mount Airy Sarah Alexander Franklin, 77, of Georgia Highway 197, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. A native of Habersham County, Mrs. Franklin was a daughter of the late Gus and Fannie Bell Warren Alexander. Mrs. Franklin was a member of Victory Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was a nurse, retiring from the Toccoa Clinic after 18 years of service. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Victory Baptist Church with the Revs. Richard Horne and David Nix officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Eugene R. Franklin, Mount Airy; two daughters, Yvonne Rudeseal, Mount Airy, and Diane Hall, Fayetteville; two sons, Roy Franklin, Clarkesville, and Keith Franklin, Powder Springs; a sister, Gussie Franklin, Mount Airy; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Angela Kay Gillespie Commerce Angela Kay McConnell Gillespie, 39, of 17 Andrew Jackson St., died Saturday, May 30, 1998. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Gillespie was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Lorene Bond McConnell. She was a homemaker and a member of Nicholson Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Nicholson Baptist Church, with the Revs. Danny Hill and Fred B. Boozer officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Howington Cemetery, Nicholson. A native of Greene County, Mr. Merritt was a son of the late Gordon Lenwood Merritt Sr. and the late Mary Elizabeth Lynch. He was owner and operator of a sawmill and dairy farm. Mr. Merritt was a member of the Walker United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Walker United Methodist Church with the Revs. Wayne Usry and Rick Maeser officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Maizell Powell Merritt; one daughter, Hilda M. Jackson, Siloam; two sons, Lester R. Merritt and Melvin T. A native of Madison County, Mr. Morris was a son of the late James Redden and Annie Sharp Morris. He was a member of Colbert United Methodist Church and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in 127th Infantry, 32nd (Red Arrow) Division. He was a member of the F.W. Mitchell-Fields Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2872, Athens, and Woodmen of the World. Mr. Morris was a retired cabinet- maker at Fort Gordon. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Colbert United Methodist Church. Dr. Robert L. McDaniel and Chaplain Mike Mims will officiate. Burial will be in Colbert City Cemetery. Survivors include four sisters, Betty Logan, Katie Toney, Irene Osborne and Marie Morris, all of Colbert; and two brothers, Joe Morris and Clifford Morris, both of Colbert. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Pilgrim was a son of the late Elijah T. and Lelia Bryson Pilgrim. He was a retired supervisor at Monroe Auto Equipment, and a member of Royston Baptist Church and the Botheine Sunday school class. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a lifetime member of the Harrison McCrary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4828. Mr. Pilgrim was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Ann Pilgrim. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Royston Baptist Church with the Revs. Danny Barton and Doug Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Billy Tiller Carlton John William "Billy" Tiller Sr., 70, of 2288 Elberton Road, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Tiller was a son of the late John Millard and Irene Pitts Tiller. He was retired from the granite industry as a quarry superintendent and served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He was a member of Burts United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Burts United Methodist Church with the Rev. Russell Bruce officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Sikes Tiller; two daughters, Sheila King and Deborah Tiller, both of Carlton; one son, John W. Tiller Jr., Carlton; and two grandchildren.
