Aderhold, wife of the late Dr. O.C. Aderhold, who was president of the University of Georgia from 1950 to 1967, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998. UGA President Michael F. Adams, who had met Mrs. Aderhold since arriving in Athens last fall, said "She was a gracious lady who represented the best of this university and served it so well throughout her life." Mrs. Aderhold, 95, was originally from Atlanta and received two degrees in home economics from UGA, a bachelor's degree in 1924 and a master's degree in 1931. Upon completion of her bachelor's degree, Mrs. Aderhold taught home economics in Jefferson, where she met her husband, a local principal at the time. They were married in 1926. Dr. Aderhold joined UGA's education faculty in 1929. After they returned to Athens, Mrs. Aderhold pursued her master's degree, a program that had just been established in 1928. She was one of the first degree recipients. Her graduate work focused on child nutrition and education. While she was in graduate school, she worked in the university's nursery school, now known as the McPhaul Center. Dr. Aderhold became dean of the College of Education in 1946. Four years later he was named the 17th president of the University of Georgia. In 1949, the former home of Sen. Benjamin H. Hill, located on Price Avenue, was remodeled and donated to the university as the President's House. Dr. and Mrs. Aderhold moved into the house in 1950 and lived there throughout Dr. Aderhold's presidential term. Mrs. Aderhold was known as a cordial hostess, opening the house to many receptions and university events. Dr. Aderhold retired from the university in 1967 and died July 4, 1969. Their son, O.C. Aderhold Jr. died in 1982 in Fort Lee, Va., while serving on active duty with the U.S. Army Reserve. Mrs. Aderhold was a member of the Georgia Women's Club and the Athens Garden Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens and a charter and life member of the Friends of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. She had also been active with Chi Omega Sorority, Thalian Blackfriars and the UGA Retirees Association. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at Athens First Baptist Church with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service. Private burial services will be at Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Aderhold, Athens; and a niece and nephew. Honorary pallbearers will be the Aderhold Class and the Jenkins Sunday school class. Bridges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Marie Bauknight Hartwell Mary Marie Slate Bauknight, 87, of 1301 Elrod's Ferry Road, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998. A native of Fulton County, Mrs. Bauknight was a daughter of the late William Alonzo "Lon" and Cordelia "Delia" Carroll Slate and widow of John Harold Bauknight. She was preceded in death by a son, John Harold Bauknight Jr. She was a retired nurse's assistant and a member of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Strickland Funeral Home, Hartwell, with the Rev. Terry Meeks officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. Bennett, 91, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998. Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of the late Cleveland and Mattie Tucker and widow of Grady Bennett. She was retired from the federal government and was a member of First Baptist Church, Winder. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Carter Hill Christian Church Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Bill Bennett, Watkinsville; a sister, Lillian Lester, Lawrenceville; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home, Winder. Thelma Bishop Commerce Thelma Estelle Sears Bishop, 86, of 319 Hope Road, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Bishop was a daughter of the late George and Cora (Hill) Sears and widow of Hubert Bishop. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery. Survivors include three sisters, Willie Mae Haynes and Nell Sears, both of Commerce, and Gertrude Martin, Greenville, S.C.; and three brothers, Arthur Sears and James Sears, both of Commerce, and Roy Sears, Villa Rica. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Sara Coffeen Comer Sara S. Coffeen, 77, of 317 Chandler-Silver Road, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998. A native and lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Coffeen was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Birdie Martin Silver. She was the retired owner and operator of Coffeen Jeweler's and was a member of Mount Pleasant Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and a former Justice of the Peace in Oglethorpe County. Robert McKern Hartwell Robert Warren McKern, 60, of 1597 Elberton Hwy. died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mr. McKern was a son of the late Loyed and Johnnie Mae Clark McKern. He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Mitchell McKern. He was a retired inspector for Monroe Auto Equipment Company where he was employed for 32 years. He was of the Baptist faith. The family is at the residence. Hattie Peek Athens Hattie Laura Peek, 95, of 1050 Martin Luther King Parkway, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998. A native of Athens, Mrs. Peek was born June 11, 1902, to the late Joseph and Laura Smith. She married George Henry Peek on June 13, 1921, and to this union of 72 years, 14 children were born. Mrs. Peek was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Dorothy Williams, and a son, Mr. Ernest Peek. During her lifetime, she was a homemaker and a wonderful mother not only to her birth children, but also to many adopted children. She joined Timothy Baptist Church in 1915 at the age of 13. There she served faithfully as an usher, president of the Mission Board, and mother of the church for 81 years, until her health failed. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Timothy Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry F. Hutchins officiating. Interment will be in East Lawn Cemetery. A native of Hart County, Miss Phillips was a daughter of Mrs. Dora Baker Phillips of Hartwell and the late Jack Phillips. She was a greeter at Wal-Mart and a member of the East Lavonia Church of God.
