Biscoe Jr. Bethesda, Md. Alvin Blocksom Biscoe Jr., 66, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998. A native of Lewisburg, Penn. Mr. Biscoe graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.A. in 1952 and served in the Army during the Korean War. He then earned a MBA in finance from the University of Chicago in 1956 and worked as a market analyst, then financial analyst for Standard Oil. He earned a Ph.D. in economics and business administration in 1964 at the University of Florida, where he served as an instructor and assistant professor of finance and as assistant director of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research. In 1966, he became the director for the Center for Business and Economic Research, associate professor of finance at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and assistant vice president of the University of Tennessee System for Public Service. He designed the Institute for Public Service, which became a model for land grant universities throughout the country. He later worked with the National Science Foundation in a variety of positions and later established the public affairs firm of Mongovan, Biscoe and Duchin Inc., Washington, D.C. As a volunteer, Dr. Biscoe served communities in Tennessee and Washington, D.C. He was a member of Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, Md. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Episcopal Church, Potomac Parish, 10033 River Road, Potomac, Md. 20854. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens. Survivors include his wife, the Rev. Eleanor Biscoe; a daughter, Sara Duke Biscoe, Bethesda, Md.; and three sons, Charles Biscoe and Jack Dempster, both of Washington, D.C., and Will Biscoe, Rockville, Md. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. John P. Black Hull John P. Black of Sanford Community, Hull, Ga., died Wednesday, July 29, 1998. He celebrated his 54th birthday on July 26th. He was the son of Ramie Turner Black of Cleveland, Ga., and the late Issac P. Black. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Standridge Black, two daughters and sons-in-law, Johnette and Butch Appleby of Hull, Ga., and Amy and Dennis Smock of Danielsville, Ga., and his in-laws, Talmer and Oma Standridge of Cleveland, Ga. He was "Papa" to five grandchildren, Kristen, Branson and Matthew Smock and Stephen and Kaitlin Appleby. John was owner and sole technician of Black's Appliance Repair Inc. He never won any honors for his job, but had hundreds of valued, loyal customers. John was an active member of Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church where he had served on the Administrative Council for numerous years. He was also actively involved in the Athens Area Emmaus Community. Funeral services will be today at Gordons Chapel UMC with the Rev. Robert Passmore and the Rev. Billy Pittman officiating. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Cheek was a daughter of the late J. Hubert and Evelyn Jackson Hewin and widow of Alton W. Cheek. She was a past co-owner of Cheek Electric and Cheek's Boutique in Lavonia. She was a former member and past president of Royston Travel Club. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lavonia where she was an adult choir member, former treasurer for 23 years, leader of the junior varsity AWANA, and older pre-school Sunday school teacher. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Lavonia, with the Revs. Richard Dickson, J. Curtis Gilstrap, and Bobby Jones officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include three daughters, Joy C. Elrod, Lori Manley and Jill Cheek, all of Bowersville; and six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Pruitte Funeral Home, Royston, is in charge of arrangements. Clarence E. Christian Danielsville Clarence E. Christian, 95, of 334 Macedonia Church Road, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998. A native of Madison County, he spent the last 14 months with his son, Joe, in Gainesville. He was the son of the late William and Fannie Mae Westbrook Christian and the widower of Ossie Mae Sorrow Christian. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lee Christian; 2 sons, Delma "Bussie" and Leo Christian; and by a number of brothers and sisters. He was a retired farmer and a Blacksmith and Barber for the Madison County Community. He was a deacon of Bluestone Baptist Church, which he helped to construct. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel, Danielsville. The Rev. Ray Jenkins and David McDonald will officiate. Burial will be in Bluestone Baptist Church Cemetery. Utah Lawrence died Monday, July 27, 1998. A native of Greene County, Mr. Lawrence was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church in White Plains prior to his moving to New York. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late Sidney and Pauline Strickland McElroy. She was employed with Ranick Limited for 18 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Bill Wood officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Talmadge Moore; a son, David Moore, Hull; a sister, Sarah Harike, Athens; and two grandsons and a great-granddaughter. Evelyn Morrison Danielsville Mary Evelyn Belk Morrison, 73, died Saturday, August 1, 1998. Affectionately known as "Bea," she died at home surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly. Bea was born in Franklin County, daughter of the late Eva Mae Robertson Belk and William Howard "Knox" Belk Sr. She is survived by her husband, Buster Morrison; children and their spouses, Lester and Rhonda Morrison and Gail and Eddie Fisher of Danielsville; Brenda and Farris Gary and Dianne Seagraves of Athens and Cheryl Elaine Cefalu of Grayson. She is also the beloved grandmother of Todd Morrison and his wife Amy, Rusty and Robin Morrison, Jennifer Gary, Jason and Monica Seagraves, Clay and Jill Fisher and Michael and Nicholas Cefalu. Other special people in her life were sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and in-laws who visited and helped care for her during her extended illness. Graveside services will be Monday, August 3, 1998, at 3:00 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The revs. Wayne Douglas and Ralph Mabry will officiate. The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, Sunday from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. as well as at her home.
