A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Fields was a daughter of the late Rufus and Devonah Puckett Hale. She was retired after 48 years at Puritan Mills and was a member of Princeton United Methodist Church. Funeral service will 2 p.m. Wednesday at Princeton UMC with the Rev. Peggy Lowe officiating. Scroggs Hoschton Mildred L. Scroggs, 73, of Highway 53, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998. A native of Barrow Country, Mrs. Scroggs was a daughter of the late Charlie and Viola James Moulder and widow of Hubert D. Scroggs. She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and Jackson County Senior Citizens, a retired beauty shop owner and former writer of West Jackson Dots for the Jackson Herald. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Sharon Baptist Church with the Revs. Ricky Thrasher and Marion Prather officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Turmon, 78, of 1587 Turmon Road died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998. A native of Elbert County, Mr. Turmon was a son of the late Robert Clearance and Mary Bell Thomas Turmon. A native of Banks County, Mr. Vaughn was a son of the late Goode and Fay Mabry Vaughn. He was retired from Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Co. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Lula, with the Rev. Ralph O. Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Floy Whitehead Iowa City, Iowa Floy Eugenia Whitehead, 84, formerly of 306 Ferson Ave. died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998. A native of Athens, Professor Whitehead was born Feb. 10, 1913, a daughter of James Fred Whitehead and Floy Eugenia Landrum, the second of eight children. She received her education in Athens Public Schools; the University of Georgia, from which she received a B.S. in home economics in 1936 and an M.S. in education in 1942; and Harvard University, from which she received a Doctor of Science in the School of Public Health in 1951. She taught in public schools in Georgia and at West Georgia College, Louisiana State University and Mississippi State College, and was a visiting lecturer at Harvard in 1952-53. Before coming to Iowa, she was director of nutrition at Wheat Flour Institute (1952-53), and director of nutrition education for the National Dairy Council (1953-55), both in Chicago. She was named a certified specialist in human nutrition by The American Board of Nutrition and a fellow of the American Public Health Association. Her memberships included the American Home Economics Association, The Iowa Home Economics Association, where she served as president, American Dietetic Association (chairman, education section, and Lydia J. Roberts essay award), American Association of University Professors, American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Education Association, National Council of Administrators of Home Economics (founding and charter member and president). She was elected to membership in Phi Upsilon Omicron and Omicron Nu, both home economics honorary fraternities. She was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and Altrusa International. She came to Iowa City in the fall of 1955 as professor of home economics and chairman of the Department of Home Economics at the University of Iowa. She served as chairman for 16 years and continued as a teacher and researcher until her retirement in 1978. In addition to her administrative duties in the Dept. of Home Economics, she taught in the area of nutrition education and the graduate level seminar, directed many master's theses, and served on Ph.D committees. Her research interests were in nutrition education and home economics administration, and she published in numerous professional journals on both topics. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James F. Whitehead Jr., E. Winston Whitehead and Harry L. Whitehead; and a sister, Mary Ann (Mrs. Edward) Rock. A memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. with Canon Robert Holzhammer and the Rev. Jason L. Parkin officiating. Survivors include three sisters, Hazel W. (Mrs. Marion) Ivey of Bogart, Georgia, Martha W. (Mrs. Judson) Faw and Carolyn W. (Mrs. Charles) Wheeler, both of Athens, Georgia; many nieces and nephews; and her friend and companion with whom she made her home, Margaret N. Keyes of Iowa City, Iowa. A native of Hart County, Mr. Whitmire was a son of the late Samuel Rufus and Lucy Moss Whitmire and widower of Tishie Vickery Whitmire. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nina Whitmire Burden. He was a member of Bowman Baptist Church since 1912, a retired farmer, a member of Primrose Masonic Lodge 79 for 77 years and a former mayor and councilman of Bowman.
