A native of Watkinsville, Mr. Ashford was born Jan. 19, 1915, and graduated from Athens High School, where he served as president of his senior class. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he played four years of football under Coach Harry Mehre. He was known for his small size and quickness in getting beyond the scrimmage line and tackling ball carriers for large losses. He was employed in the legal department of the Coca Cola Co. bottling plant in Hannibal, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army under Gen. George Patton in Manhattan, Kan., and later in the 82nd Airborne Division under Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines, and was in Manila at the time of the Japanese surrender. Upon his discharge, he worked for the Abbot Fox Lumber Co. in Iron Mountain, Mich., for 23 years. He returned to Watkinsville in 1964, working for the Louisiana Pacific Lumber Co., and resided there until his death. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, 1998, in Watkinsville City Cemetery with the Revs. Richard Hoard and Tommy Cochran officiating. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Eugenia "Pat" Murphy Ashford, formerly of Bloomfield, Ky.; three sisters, Virginia Elliott, Constance Wright and Vivian Van Horne, all of Atlanta; two brothers, Dr. Woodson Ashford, Monroe, and Dr. John Ashford, San Francisco, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Langley, Watkinsville; cousins, Martha Bonbright and Diana Terry, both of Athens, and Ann Billups and Oswald Billups, both of Watkinsville; and several nieces and nephews. His only child, Ann Ashford Lehfledt, died in 1988 and was a well received author, known best for her work, "If I Found A Wistful Unicorn." Pallbearers will be Dr. Clint Ashford, John Elliott, Tate Wright III, Bob Langley, Jack Langley and David Hayes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ashford Memorial Fund in care of Ashford Memorial Methodist Church, Watkinsville, Ga. 30677. Patricia DiBiase Dewy Rose Patricia DiBiase, 56, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998. A native of Vineland, N.J., Ms. DiBiase was a daughter of the late Ralph and Beulah Sawyer DiBiase. She was a housekeeping supervisor at Heardmont Nursing Home, Elberton. Memorial services will be private. Survivors include her husband, John Dias; two daughters, Colleen DeGrave, Royston, and Denise Gifford, Vanna; five sons, Walter Gifford and Paul Gifford, both of Canon, Richard Gifford, Starke, Fla., Steven Gifford, Lavonia, and Brian Gifford, Fort Pierce, Fla.; two sisters, Sharon Keller, Mexico, and Terri DiBiase, Florida; five brothers, Cole DiBiase, Tony DiBiase, Blair DiBiase, Raphel DiBiase and Rackey DiBiase, all of Florida; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Berry Funeral Home, Elberton, is in charge of arrangements. Albert A. Garrison Sr. Jefferson Albert A. Garrison Sr., 73, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998. A native of Athens, Mr. Garrison was born Aug. 14, 1924, and resided in Jefferson for more than 65 years. He was a son of the late Harwell Lee and Allene Davis Garrison and was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Garrison, in 1966. He graduated from Martin Institute in Jefferson and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, stationed in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Theatre. A former owner and operator of Jackson Memorial Park in Commerce, he also worked at the Jefferson Mills, McCann Machine in Athens, General Time Division of Westclox, Ropers and Bailey Heating and Air. He was mayor of Jefferson from 1973 to 1974 and served as a deacon of First Baptist Church in Jefferson. A charter member of Jefferson Lions Club, he was a member of Albert Gordon American Legion Post 56. Survivors include Dolores L. Garrison, his wife for more than 50 years; two sons, Andy Garrison, Watkinsville, and Wayne Garrison, Lilburn; two daughters, Kay Fuller, Athens, and Chris Harris, Dunwoody; a sister, Becky Wood, Cleveland; and grandchildren, Chip Fuller, Benjamin Fuller, Corie Lance and Will Lance, all of Athens. Honorary pallbearers will include members of New Men Sunday School class and Jefferson Lions Club. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, July 3, 1998, at First Baptist Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Mickey Kirkindoll officiating. Burial will be private. A native of Chatham County, Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Dolly Jewell Eubanks and Marvin Ingram. She was a seamstress and of the Baptist faith. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Woodbine Cemetery with the Rev. Robin Self officiating. Survivors include her husband, Walter Jones; two daughters, Patty Kilgore, Berry, Ala., and Kaye Sloan, Athens; three sons, Randall Lee Carter, Braselton, and Omer Gene Carter and Danny Hubbard, both of Jefferson; two sisters, Evelyn O'Kelley, Winder, and Laura Mae Barnes, Clermont; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
