Archer Athens Holland Nathaniel "Babe" Archer, 74, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998. A native and longtime resident of Athens, Mr. Archer was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Archer-Wier Cemetery on Prince Avenue. Survivors include four sons, Ray Archer, Greenwood, Miss., Bob Archer, Jackson, Miss., and David Archer and Ed Archer, both of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Cheryl Conner, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Frances Jones, Andalusia, Ala., and Florence Miller, Smyrna; six brothers, Jimmie Waters, Ned Archer, Jack Archer and John Archer, all of Athens, Dean Archer, Monroe, and Hoyt Archer, Tucson, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren, Scott Archer and Jason Archer, both of Greenwood, Miss., Mary Archer, Melissa Archer, Catherine Archer and Lauren Roman, all of Jackson, Miss., and Hannah Archer, Tampa, Fla. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Bridges Funeral Home. Cecil P. Ayers Arcade Cecil Paul Ayers, 60, of 392 Segars St. died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998. A native of Banks County, Mr. Ayers was a son of Leo Ward Ayers and the late Bill Ayers and the widower of Dorothy Martin Ayers. He was a retired lineman. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Ivie Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Johnnie Baker Statham Johnnie Baker, 68, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998. Mr. Baker was a son of the late Fred and Gladys W. Baker. He was retired from Westinghouse and served in the Army during the Korean War. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Fuller and Bill Ruff officiating. Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Minshulla Jarrett Perry. She was a retired employee of Clemson University and a member of St. Mark Baptist Church, Madison, S.C. A native of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Champagne was a student of the University of Georgia and Harvard University. She was a teacher who pioneered the first educational program for teaching English to arriving Cuban refugees in the 1960s. She was a volunteer for the Athens Welcome Center, the Lyndon House, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and the Navy Supply Corps School, Athens. Survivors include her husband, Roy Champagne; two daughters, Gina Granger and Cheri Felipe; a son, Buddy Granger; a sister, Gloria Barker; a brother, Joe Watts; and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Athens Welcome Center and/or the Lyndon House. Faye Cheek Lavonia Faye Herring Baker Cheek, 61, of 140 Twin Circle Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Cheek was a daughter of the late Joel A. Herring and Marie Edwards Herring and was the widow of William H. Cheek. She was an employee of Sleep Inn, Lavonia, and was a member of Milltown Baptist Church. She was a retired seamstress for Comer Manufacturing Co. and a homemaker. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. A native of Sharon, Pa., Mrs. Guthrie was a daughter of the late Thomas and Clara Hurst Dunkerley. She was a retired missionary, having served in Africa for 45 years, and was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, Sharon, Pa.
