A native of Bowersville, he was a son of the late Ton B. and Mary Elbert Jones Bowers. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he served for 34 years as a rural mail carrier. He was a member of the American Legion Post #109, serving as Past Commander. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association and was a recipient of the Hartwell Rotary Club's Four Way Test Award. Mr. Bowers was a member of Hartwell First United Methodist Church, the Wallace White Sunday school class and served on various committees. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving in China, Burma and India. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Hartwell First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Giglio officiating. Burial will be in Northview Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Crawford Bowers; a son, Jerry C. Bowers, Anderson; three sisters, Doris Tyler and Mary Ton Lee, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Gloria Smale, Kensington, Md.; two brothers, William Bowers, Bowersville, and Braxton Bowers, Hartwell; and two grandchildren. Strickland Funeral Home, Hartwell, is in charge of arrangements. Mary Lou Brown Athens Mary Lou Upchurch Brown, 70, of 140 Sherwood Drive, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late George Vance and Marion West Upchurch. She spent most of her life in Athens, and retired from the University of Georgia's Plant Pathology Department. She was of the Baptist faith. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oconee Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Wesley Stephens officiating. Survivors include her husband, Ray Brown; two sons, Vance W. Snow, Athens, and Chester W. (Chet) Snow, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Charles L. Upchurch II, Athens, and George V. Upchurch, Blairsville; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. today. Julian Bryant Royston Julian Bryant, 74, of 401 Dovetown Road died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998. A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late William Boyd Bryant Sr. and Zola Lee Crider Bryant. He was a retired carpenter. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Pruitte Funeral Home with the Rev. John Forbes officiating. Burial will be in Oakview Cemetery. Spring St., died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998. A native of Greene County, he was a son of the late John Sanders Callaway and Frances Wilson. He was a graduate of Greensboro High School and Presbyterian College. He had lived in Greensboro for 65 years and was the owner and operator of Callaway Sales. Mr. Callaway was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, where he served as an Elder. He was past director of the Atlanta Textile Club. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro with the Rev. Brock Burdett officiating. Burial will be in Greensboro City Cemetery. A native of Morgan County, she was a daughter of the late Earnest D. and Mamie Tumlin Hollis. She lived in Athens for most of her life. Haird Edward Roland, 54, of 126 Orchard Lane died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997. A native of Burnsville, N.C., Mr. Roland was a son of the late John Lee and Thelma Honeycutt Roland. He lived in Toccoa for seven years before moving to Oak Ridge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was employed with a cable construction company.
