She was a retired librarian, retired from a sewing plant in Statham and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Bush Athens Merrill Colin Bush, 76, of 237 Davis St., formerly of Newtown, Ind., died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997. A native of Williamsport, Ind., Mr. Bush was a son of the late Clyde Bush and Hazel Ione Cronk Bush Kerst. He was raised in the Newtown, Ind., area and was a graduate of Richland Township High School and Purdue University. He lived in Athens since 1966 and was an officer with the Southern Mutual Insurance Co. in Athens from 1966 until his retirement in 1987. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a glider pilot, and was a member of the Newtown, Indiana Community Church, Quigle-Palin American Legion Post of Newtown, Ind., a member and past matron of the Fern Chapter 194 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Kiwanis Club of Athens. Mr. Deal moved to Charlotte in 1963 and spent his career in the propane gas industry. He was the founder and president of Charlotte Tank Trucks Inc. He was very active in the business world and was elected president of the National Propane Gas Association in 1980. He also served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. Mr. Deal was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and Myers Park Country Club. Van Winkle Jr. Greshamville M.L. "Mr. Rip" Van Winkle Jr., 94, of 1070 Copolan Road died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998. A native of Clarke County, he was a son of the late Martin Luther Van Winkle Sr. and Rebecca Vance and widower of Hattilu Adams Van Winkle. Mr. Van Winkle was a 1924 graduate of Young Harris and a 1927 graduate of Piedmont College. He received a master's degree in Education from Auburn University in 1931 and a master's degree in Agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1937. He worked for the UGA Agricultural Extension Service. Mr. Van Winkle was past Superintendent of Schools at Union Point and Madison, past Master of Madison Masonic Lodge and a member of the Georgia AirStream Club. He was a member of Fork Chapel United Methodist Church, Greshamville.
