Byrum Hartwell Josie Isom Byrum, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mrs Byrum was a daughter of the late Peter A. and Elizabeth Eliza Carnes Isom. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melody Brooke Brown. She was retired from Hart Care Center, where she worked in the laundry room, a member and former treasurer of Hart County Senior Citizens and a member of Reed Creek Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Kelley and Dr. Dan Vincent officiating. Burial will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Brown and Louise Bond, both of Hartwell; two brothers, James Isom, Hartwell, and Mack Isom, Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. Ann Krueger Ditto, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. A native of Glasgow, Ky., Mrs. Ditto was a widow of John K. Ditto. She lived many years in Greenville, Miss., and Bowling Green, Ky., and also in Memphis, Tenn., and Athens. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss. Burial will be in Bowling Green, Ky. Survivors include a daughter, Joan Berryman, Athens; a son, Kane Ditto, Jackson; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be 2:30-4 p.m. today at the church. Memorials may be made to Twin Lakes Diabetes Camp, 128 Rollingwood Drive, Jackson, Miss. 39211. Edward Dudley Jr. Atlanta Edward Gordon Dudley Jr. died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. A native of Athens, Mr. Dudley was a son of Caro Lamar DuBignon Dudley. He attended Vanderbilt University, lettering in football for three years. He was a securities broker specializing in bond sales for 16 years with Equitable securities, W.E. Hutton, Robinson-Humphrey and Thomson McKinnon. He served for 17 years in Christian ministry and was vice president of Reflections Ministries. He was a Bible teacher of widespread influence in Atlanta, Athens and Nashville, Tenn. A highlight of his ministry was returning to Episcopal High School, which he attended, and speaking to the students and teachers in the new chapel. For 24 years he was a football official in the Georgia Football Officials Association and the Southeastern Conference. He served as an observer of officials and as the official's chaplain for the past seven years. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Second Ponce DeLeon Baptist Church with Dr. A. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Guest was a daughter of the late Henry and Lettie Moss Dixon and widow of Charlie E. Guest. She was a homemaker and a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late John W. and Essie McKelly Madden and widow of A.W. Johnson. She was a homemaker, a member of Fortsonia Baptist Church and a retired seamstress. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Meeks officiating. Alan Scott Commerce Alan "Scotty" Scott, 86, of 530 Roosevelt Blvd. died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. A native of Fairfax County, Va., Mr. Scott was retired after 35 years as a taxi cab driver in Washington, D.C. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Grayhill Cemetery. Dr. Richard Starr Austin, Texas Dr. Richard Cawthon Starr, 73, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998. A native of Greene County, Dr. Starr received his B.S. degree from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) in 1944, his M.A. from George Peabody College in 1947, and his Ph.D. in 1952 from Vanderbilt University in the field of biology. Dr. Starr was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University from 1950 to 51 and served as president for both the Botanical Society and the Phycological Society of America in 1971. Dr. Starr was a Fellow of the American Advancement of Science and Indiana Academy of Sciences. He served as Instructor to Professor of Botany at Indiana University from 1952 to 1976, where he was also the acting chairman in 1970. He received the Alumnus Award from Georgia Southern University Biology Department in 1971. Since 1976 he had been serving as Professor of Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. He also was the director of the Algae Culture Collection Section of the International Microbiological Society. He was a member of the National Academy of Science, election into which is the highest honor that can be bestowed to a scientist in the United States. During his career, he also had received many other honors and awards. Graveside services will be at at 11 a.m. today in Greensboro City Cemetery, Greensboro, with the Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Jo Starr and Tal Callaway, Statesboro; a niece, Starr Callaway Anderson, Statesboro; and a nephew, Sanders Richard Callaway, Augusta. She was a retired kindergarten teacher and a member of the Hartwell Garden Club, Hartwell Ladies Golf Association and Sharon Presbyterian Church, where she served as elder and was active in the women's work at the church.
