A native of Baltimore, Mrs. Hester was a daughter of the late James Clinton and Margaret Gemeney Lindsey and was the widow of Richard Lawrence Hester. She was a registered nurse, having received her degree from the University of Tennessee. She was a first lieutenant in World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Toccoa, United Methodist Women, Veterans of Foreign Wars 4346 and Toccoa Cotillion Club. She had served on the Altar Guild and, prior to retirement, was in charge of medical records at Stephens County Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Canon Universalist-Unitarian Church. He was an Air Force veteran who served as a B-24 pilot during World War II and later managed the Social Security office in Winder.
