George Marlow Jr. Colbert George Washington Marlow Jr., 79, of 410 Mitchell Farm Road died Monday, July 6, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Marlow was a son of thelate George Washington and Glennie Thaxton Marlow and was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Margaret Fair Marlow. He was an Army 17th Airborne veteran of World War II and lived in the Athens area most of his life. He operated several businesses in the Clarke County area including a service station at the corner of Milledge Avenue and Macon Highway. He enjoyed meeting and serving the public and loved his and all other children. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church, Athens. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Revs. Carlton Shelton and Bill Ricketts officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Charles Smith Gainesville Charles Carr Smith, 71, of 3174 Clarks Bridge Road died Tuesday, July 7, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Sue Marshall Smith, formerly of Americus; by a sister, Cecile Johnson, of Newark, Del.; by three daughters, Denise Smith, of Jefferson, Cecile Moore, and her husband, Chuck Moore, of Athens, and Patricia Ruppersburg, and her husband, Hugh Ruppersburg, of Athens; and by three grandsons, Michael Ruppersburg, Charles Ruppersburg and Max Ruppersburg, all of Athens. Charles Smith led a long and distinguished career in radio broadcasting in Georgia. he was born in Augusta, Ga., in 1926 and spent much of his youth there and in New York City. He graduated in 1947 from Fordham University, where he majored in English and philosophy and minored in broadcasting. From an early age he was a fan of jazz, Dixieland, and big band music, an interest which led to his involvement in radio. After serving as an intern for the National Broadcasting Co. and as the first announcer for WFUV-FM in Fordham, he moved to Georgia. In 1948, he agreed to work for two weeks as a substitute announcer at WDEC in Americus, Ga., a job which lengthened to span more than 20 years. He became general manager of WDEC in 1949 and later became owner of the station, which was named the first Georgia Association of Broadcasters Station of the Year in 1964. In 1968 Charles sold these interests and, in 1970, moved to Elizabethtown, Penn., where he became the owner of WPDC AM and FM radio. He sold his interest in these stations in 1980 and, after teaching at Elizabethtown College as an adjunct broadcasting professor, in 1983 moved to Gainesville, Ga., where he directed radio station WBCX and taught broadcasting and speech at Brenau University. Charles Smith was active in both professional and community affairs. From 1965 to 1970 he was a director of the National Association of Broadcasters. He served as president of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters and the Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association. In 1996 he was inducted into the GAB Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was a director of the Chamber of Commerce in both Americus and Elizabethtown, and belonged to the Rotary and Civitan clubs. In Elizabethtown he was a director of the Elizabethtown Hospital for Crippled Children, the local Blood Bank, and the Regional Police Planning Commission. He was a strong believer in public education and served as the vice chairman of the Americus City Board of Public Education. During his retirement, Charles Smith took up woodworking and became an award-winning member and exhibitor in the Woodworkers Guild of Georgia and the Quinlan Art Center in Gainesville. His work has been exhibited and sold at galleries throughout North Georgia. Charles Smith was an avid fan of music whose knowledge of popular and classical music was prodigious. His irrepressible sense of humor and wit left a mark on everyone who knew him. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today, July 8, 1998, in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, Ga., with the Rev.
