Brake Baldwin Clyde D. Brake, 88, died Friday, June 5, 1998. A native of Rock Cave, W.Va., he was a son of the late Charley and Mary Crawford Brake. He was a retired machinist of the Timken Co. in Canton, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Rock Cave United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Tomblyn Funeral Home in Buckhannon, W.Va. Burial will be in Rock Cave United Methodist Church Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Merle A. Brake, Baldwin; and two sisters, Madge Brake, Largo, Fla., and Mary Lewis, Dayton, Ohio. The family will receive friends at Tomblyn Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sheriff's Association Youth Homes, P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, Ga. 30281-9878. Joe W. Burroughs Winterville Joe White Burroughs, 69, of 90 Pittard Road, died Sunday, June 7, 1998. A native of Madison County, Mr. Burroughs was a son of the late Curtis and Lois White Burroughs. He was retired from Oliver Rubber Co. in Athens. Mr. Burroughs was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Friendship Baptist Church and the Winterville Lions Club. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery, Madison County, with the Rev. Dayton Logan officiating. Survivors include his wife, Mabel Hardeman Pittard Burroughs; a son, Gregory Joseph Burroughs, Danielsville; two stepdaughters, Donna Wheless and Joy White, both of Winterville; two stepsons, Richard Aaron, Arnoldsville, and Billy Pittard, Winterville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jim Mercer, Kenneth Hodges, Billy Culberson, Jim Hardeman, James A. Melton and William Embry. Honorary pallbearers will be the Winterville Lions Club. Memorials may be made to the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Georgia Highway 98, Danielsville, Ga. 30633. The family is at the residence and will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Olin C. Cleveland Hartwell Olin Comer Cleveland, 91, of 712 Benson St., died Sunday, June 7, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mr. Cleveland was a son of the late John Dyar and Ida Elmira Bobo Cleveland. Mr. Cleveland was a graduate of Hartwell High School, Bob Jones University and the University of Georgia. He taught school several years in Oconee, Jackson and Hart counties. In 1946 he went into business as the Economy Auto Associate store owner in Hartwell, retiring in 1967. He was one of the founders of the Bank of Hartwell and served on its board of directors until its merger with Northeast Georgia Bank. Mr. Cleveland was a past president of Hartwell Kiwanis Club, a former member of the Hartwell School board of trustees and a former director of the Hart County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hartwell. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Strickland Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Cobb Cowan Cleveland; a daughter, Kaye Beth Cleveland Chafin, Columbia, Tenn.; a sister, Sally Vernelle Cleveland Thomas, Bogart; a brother, Howard Clifton Cleveland, Greenville, S.C.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 2-3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family is at the residence. Venie D. Simmons Athens Venie D. Simmons, 84, of 1637 Oak Grove Road, died Friday, June 5, 1998. A native of Putnam County, Mrs. Simmons was a daughter of the late Tom Dance and Effie Smith. Mrs. Simmons was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of Mother Board, a deaconess and a youth director. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews Baptist Church with Rev. H.L. Dotson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Bobby Simmons; a daughter, Venie (Clinton) Yancey, Athens; a son, James Tommy Simmons, Athens; three sisters, Maggie Shakespeare, Athens, and Ola Dance and Mattie Ogburn, both of Newark, N.J.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
