Gartrell Washington Mamie B. Gartrell, 62, of 323 Old Skull Shoal Road died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998. A native of Washington, Mrs. Gartrell was a daughter of the late C.B. and Louise Brittain and was the widow of Clarence Gartrell. She was a member of Gibson Grove Baptist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gibson Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Roderick Bradford officiating. Burial will be in City West Cemetery. Survivors include two sisters, Lucille Curry, Augusta, and Eva Brittain, Washington; and three brothers, Billy Brittain and Charles Brittain, both of Washington, and Harry Brittain, New York. McLendon Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ruth A. Greene Athens Ruth A. Greene died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998. Mrs. Greene was a graduate of Vanderbilt University. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Oconee Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Jordan officiating. Survivors include three sons, Dr. James E. Greene Jr., Atlanta, Dr. George R. Greene, Houston, and Dr. William A. Greene, New Orleans; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, Decatur. Amanda B. Haymore Madison Amanda B. Haymore, 88, of 757 Jasper St. died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998. A native of Morgan County, Mrs. Haymore was a daughter of the late Sara Elizabeth Patrick and Lucius W. Daniel and was the widow of Walter C. Haymore. She was a retired secretary for Madison Baptist Church and a member of Madison Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Madison Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Ross and W.T. Booth officiating. Burial will be in Buckhead City Cemetery. Survivors include two brothers, Albert L. Daniels and Floyd B. Daniel, both of Madison; a niece and a nephew. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Simmons Funeral Home. James Haynes Danielsville James Edward Haynes, 69, of Jot Em Down Road died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998. A native of Danielsville, Mr. Haynes was a son of Willie Mae Haynes, Commerce, and the late Earnest W. Haynes. He was retired from the City of Commerce as manager of the Maintenance Department. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Laine McGarity, Royston; a son, James Michael Haynes, Danielsville; three sisters, Estelle Denton, Homer, and Jean Hooper and Virginia Puckett, both of Commerce; two brothers, E.W. Oscar Haynes and Harold Pete Haynes, both of Commerce; and two grandchildren. Jane Herring Kokomo, Ind. Jane Carper Herring, 64, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998. A native of Texas, Mrs. Herring was a daughter of the late John Henry and Anna Louise Tolbert Carper. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. Private memorial services will be later. Survivors include two daughters, Sharlie Herring and Christine Todd, both of Athens; five sons, Brad Herring, Tim Herring, Andy Herring, Robert Todd and Michael Todd, all of Athens; two sisters, Virginia Hubbard, Atlanta, and Mary Lou Smith, Laurinburg, N.C.; a brother, Dan Carper, Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren. Mary Norton Royston Mary Alice Roling Norton, 72, of 471 Beaverdam Farm Road, Royston, Ga., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston, Ga. Mrs Norton was born in Madison County, Aug. 5, 1926, a daughter of the late Theo and Elizabeth Coldwell Roling. She was a homemaker, a seamstress and a member of Rice Baptist Church. Services for Mrs. Norton will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at the Chapel of Pruitte Funeral Home with the Revs. Frank Owens and Willard Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens-South. Survivors include her husband, John C. Norton, Royston; a daughter, Alice Fay Norton Beard, Royston; two sisters, Sarah Hudgins, Conyers, and Doris Owens, Lavonia; two brothers, M.L. Roling and Talmadge Roling, both of Lavonia; grandchildren, John Richard and Susie Beard, Hartwell, and Mary Donna Beard, Royston; and four great-grandchildren. Dorothy Simms Whitehead Athens Dorothy Simms Whitehead, 87, died after a short illness on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998. Her funeral will be graveside at Oconee Hill Cemetery Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Bill Britt and the Rev. Grady Wigley will officiate. A native of Rome, Ga., Mrs. Whitehead was born Jan. 25, 1911, to William Sheldon and Fannie MacDonald Simms. She attended local schools and graduated from Rome High School in 1926 and from Shorter College in 1930 with a degree in French. As a young woman she frequently came to Athens to visit her sister, the late Mrs. Homer K. Nicholson. She came to Athens again in 1930 to pursue her Master's degree in French from the University of Georgia and attained it in 1931. That year she also met her future husband, Thomas H. Whitehead, a young chemistry professor. The two were married Dec. 19, 1931. Prior to World War II, Mrs. Whitehead taught French at the University of Georgia, where she was also coordinator of NYA programs and career counseling. For many years Mrs. Whitehead was active in women's and civic organizations in Athens. She served at various times as president of the Athens Junior Assembly, the Athens YWCO, the Chi Omega Sorority House Corporation and was vice president of the University Women's Association. She served on the board of the United Way, and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She always had a keen interest in newcomers to Athens and tried to involve them in local organizations. She is survived by a son, John Simms Whitehead, and his wife, Patricia, of Fairbanks, Alaska, and grandson, Andrew Whitehead; granddaughter, Elizabeth Bunce, and her husband, Dale, of Vista, Calif., and great-granddaughters, Alison Bunce and Lauren Bunce; daughter-in-law, Susan Townley, and her husband, Richard, of New Braunfels, Texas; sister, Mrs. Willard Copeland of Bowdon; and brother-in-law, J. Comer Whitehead, and his wife, Virginia, of Athens; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Thomas Hillyer Whitehead, and a son, Thomas Hillyer Whitehead Jr. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Bridges Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Athens YWCO or the First United Methodist Church.
