A native of Greenville, S.C., Mr. Burns was a son of the late David and Lucille Coleman Burns. He graduated from Furman University, where he played basketball and was known as "Stick" Burns to his peers. He served in the Korean War, was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4346 and served as assistant Quarter Master. He served as president of the Little League, was active with the American Cancer Society, was past treasurer and charter member of Grace Baptist Church and Disciple Sunday school class. He was vice president of Citizens Bank until retiring in 1991. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Joel Bradberry and Tom Dooley officiating. Entombment will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Joanne Kelley Burns; two sons, Kelly Coleman Burns and Casey Holman Burns, both of Toccoa; a brother, Leland Burns, Anderson, S.C.; an aunt; and three grandchildren. Deacon Elzie Carter Toccoa Deacon Elzie Carter, 87, of 110 Emily St. died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mr. Carter was a son of the late Mahlon and Lucy Johnson Carter. He was preceded in death by two sons, L.C. Carter and Bruce Carter. He was a share cropper for many years and was retired from the Stephens County school system. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Martin Grove Baptist Church, Martin, with the Rev. Willie Young officiating. Burial will be in Hurricane Grove Cemetery.
