A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Brown was a son of Marie Brown of Toccoa and the late Rural Brown. He was a teacher at Toccoa Elementary School and a member and deacon of Martin Grove Baptist Church, Martin. A native of Demorest, Mr. Carpenter was a son of the late Lilly Belle Turpin and William Stanhope Carpenter Sr. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the Infantry Division in France, Italy and Germany. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a member of First United Methodist Church of Toccoa and the Toccoa Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars 4346. Mr. Freeman was a son of the late Mortimer and Catherine Freeman. He was retired from the U.S. Army after serving for 21 years. William E. Griffin Hahira William E. "Billy" Griffin passed away May 14, 1998, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born Feb. 9, 1926, to William H. and Carrie Mae Griffin of Hahira, Georgia. Mr. Griffin was retired from civil service at Moody Air Force Base. He was also engaged in farming and real estate. He loved Hahira and built 30 homes in that area. He was a member of Hahira United Methodist Church. Mr. Griffin is survived and well loved by his wife, Peggy, of Hahira; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Karen Griffin of Athens, Georgia, and Joe and Kim Griffin of Camden, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Jesi, Jake, Patrick and Aaron. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Sara Suttles and her husband, Drew, of Tucker, Georgia; two brothers, Harvey Griffin and his wife, Margie, of Valdosta, Georgia, and Harold Griffin of Rome, Georgia. "Vat" Hughey, 82, of 351 Gordon St. died Saturday, May 9, 1998. A native of Walton County, the Rev. Hughey was a son of the late Luther Malcome and Agnes Hughey. He pastored the Gillsville and Maysville Baptist churches, Fellowship Baptist Church, Social Circle, Broad River Baptist Church, Lavonia, and St. Paul First Baptist Church, Jefferson. He retired from St. Paul in 1994 after 38 years of service. He served in the Northwestern Baptist Association for more than 60 years and served as 2nd vice moderator for 20 years. He was instrumental in the plans for the subdivision of the homeowners on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Jefferson, and was named Citizen of the Year by the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Council in 1994. He served on the Jefferson Housing Authority Board and was retired from the University of Georgia as a maintenance supervisor. The family is at the residence. Bill Marett Hartwell William Joseph "Bill" Marett, 82, of 215 Johnny St. died Wednesday, May 13, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mr. Marett was a son of the late Walter William and Nettie Vickery Marett. He was a graduate of Spartanburg Junior College, the University of Georgia and the Army School of Engineering, Fort Belvoir, Va. He was the owner of Bill Marett's Western Auto in Hartwell from 1950-89 and a former teacher in the Rabun County and Hart County school systems. He was a World War II U.S. Army Corps of Engineers veteran, having enlisted immediately after Pearl Harbor. He rose to the rank of Captain and served under General Douglas MacArthur in 506th Engineering Co. in New Guinea and the Philippines. He served in the Army Reserves until 1956. He was a former member and past president of Hartwell Rotary Club, member and past commander of American Legion Post 109, former member and past fund chairman of American Red Cross, former member and director of Hart County Chamber of Commerce and organizing member and former director of Hart County Jaycees.
