Davis Elberton Clara B. Davis of 370 Wilcox Heights died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late Henry and Vassie Wood and was the widow of Howard Davis. She was preceded in death by three sons, H.T. Andrews, Billy Andrews and Kennon Raines. She was a homemaker and a member of Church of God of Bowman. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bowman, with the Rev. Curtis Hammond officiating. Survivors include six daughters, Nell Gehrke, Merritt Island, Fla., Jo Beaver and Annie Bunton, both of Mooresville, N.C., Fay Andrews Massey, Elberton, Reba Patanella, Rogers, Ark., and Jean Almond, Athens; four sons, Robert Andrews and Dudley Raines, both of Elberton, Edward Raines, Athens, and Doyle Andrews, Hartwell; two sisters, Vera Roach and Evelyn May, both of Royston; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge of arrangements. Ernest Gordon Smyrna Ernest Leo Gordon, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998. Dr. Gordon began practicing optometry in Atlanta in 1950 in the Peachtree Arcade and later moved his practice to the First National Bank Building, Atlanta. He was a World War II veteran and a member of First Baptist Church, Marietta. Services were Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Marietta with the Rev. Ken Jones officiating. Burial was in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Reid, Austell, and Janet Jones, Dahlonega; a sister, Hattie Pearl Foster, Hull; and three grandchildren. Carmichael Funeral Home, Marietta, was in charge of arrangements. Charles Kay Fairfax, Va. Charles S. Kay, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998. A native of Lavonia, Mr. Kay was a son of the late Sam and Nettie Lee Kay and was the widower of Juanita Steiner Kay. Private memorial services will be later in Lavonia. Survivors include three sisters, Louise Carroll and Ruth White, both of Toccoa, and Mary Wells, Anderson, S.C.; and two brothers, Hoyt Kay and J.T. Kay, both of Lavonia. Bertie Mae Macomson, 91, of 1903 Challenger Court, Atlantic Beach, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at the Riverwood Center in Jacksonville, Fla. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Macomson was born Feb. 21, 1907, a daughter of the late William Cleveland and Evie Ann Scarboro James. She was retired from Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, N.C., and was a member of Kannapolis Church of God. Her husband was the late Howard Clifton Macomson. She was preceded in death by a son, James Rivers Macomson, and four brothers, Odell James, Otis James, Carris James and Felton James. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at New Hope Holiness Church with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Zidon Baptist Church Cemetery. Thomas Maynard Winder Thomas "Burson" Maynard, 60, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998. Mr. Maynard was a son of the late Thomas F. and Elizabeth O'Barr Maynard and the widower of Marie Patton Maynard. He was a farmer and served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Lexington Aircraft Carrier. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home with the Revs. Virgil Vickers and Elaine Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Nazareth United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Beth Autry, Winder; a son, Tim Maynard, Winder; a sister, Suzanne Hibbs, Atlanta; and three grandchildren. Mary Reaves Athens Mary Reaves, 38, of 320 Calhoun Drive died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998. A native of Madison County, Ms. Reaves was a daughter of Berlene Phillip Reaves and the late James Russell Reaves. She was an employee of Lectro Co. of Athens for 15 years and was of the Baptist faith. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Zidon Baptist Church, Sandy Cross Community, Franklin County, with the Revs. Glenn Guest and Vernon Dormany officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her fiance, William Hoey; two sisters, Linda Steele, Danielsville, and Barbara Finch, Whitehall, employed by Bells Food Store, Athens; three nephews and a niece, P.J. Southerland Sr. Atlanta Edwin W. Southerland Sr., 82, formerly of Athens, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998. A native of Jasper, Ala., Mr. Southerland was raised in Athens. He was a graduate of Athens High School, the University of Georgia and the UGA Law School. He also had a master's degree in taxation from George Washington University Law School. As an undergraduate, he was on the UGA tennis team and a member of the SAE fraternity. Upon graduation from Law School, he briefly practiced law in Florida before the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he served in North Africa and Italy as an officer assigned to the U.S. Army Adjutant General Corps. He was honorably discharged as a major. After the war, he worked for five years as an attorney for the IRS in Washington, D.C. He subsequently became assistant general counsel, in charge of tax affairs for Norther Pacific Railway (predecessor to Burlington Northern) in St. Paul, Minn. Starting in 1968, he and his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Lamkin Southerland (also from Athens, Ga.) co-founded several companies which purchased and successfully operated the Robert Half International franchises (specializing in financial personnel placements) in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens. Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Gerdine Southerland, Amherst, Va., and Susan Page Southerland and Ann Hamilton Southerland, both of Atlanta; two sons, Edwin W. Southerland Jr., Washington, D.C., and Patrick Lamkin Southerland, Bethesda, Md.; a brother, Henry DeLeone Southerland, Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren, Katherine Ashton Southerland, Annapolis, Md., Brett Lee Clark, Atlanta, and Sarah Jenson Southerland, Bethesda, Md.; a niece, Nancy White, Beaufort, S.C.; and two nephews, Frank White, Dalton, and Billy White, Auburn, Ala. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Wilkes was a daughter of Clarence and Ruby Faye Garrett Simmons, Jefferson. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Smith Jr. She was a retired communications officer at Athens Regional Medical Center and a member of Bethany Methodist Church. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Methodist Church with the Revs. Hulon Hill and Mark Danzy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Luther Wilkes; a daughter, Cammie Wilkes Thomas, Jefferson; four sons, Dwight Smith, Mark Smith and Kerry Smith, all of Winder, and Dustin Luther Wilkes, Jefferson; two sisters, Olivia Barretta, Valdosta, and Barbara Pardue, Winder; a brother, Clarence Simmons Jr., Jefferson; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
