Adams, 93, of 460 Hampton Court, Athens native and lifelong community leader, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998. For many years vice president and general manager of Trussell Motor Company, he joined that company as a youth. In 1967, he became public relations manager of Heyward Allen Motor Company. He was a long-time director and director emeritus of Southern Mutual Insurance Company. Adams' civic career included two terms on the Athens City Council and charter membership on the Model Cities Policy Board. He was instrumental in establishing the Northeast Georgia Mental Health-Mental Retardation Center. An active member of the First Baptist Church, he attended the Forum Class and served on the church's Board of Deacons for more than 30 years, becoming its chairman. Adams had been a member of Athens Rotary Club since 1934. Committed to individual, personal contact with youth and seniors, Adams regularly shared his knowledge of Athens lore and history with local school children as a ROLE volunteer. He visited nursing home residents weekly. Adams raised funds for St. Mary's Hospital, the YWCO, the Heart Association, and the Boy Scouts, who honored him with the Silver Beaver award in 1983. He was named Volunteer of the Year by United Way of Northeast Georgia in 1990. In 1992, Adams received a Citation of Merit from the Georgia Gerontology Society for leadership in the formation of the Athens Community Council on Aging. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. Dr. Jon Appleton will officiate. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service. Private burial services will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Married for 60 years to the late Louise Ivey, he is survived by two sons, Gen. (ret.) F. Cecil Adams Jr. and wife Sally, Greensboro, N.C., and Cuyler M. (Buck) Adams and wife Diane, Athens; a daughter, Barbara Coplin and husband John, Athens; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A native of Hart County, Mr. Byrum was a son of the late Fletcher and Ethel Hall Byrum. He was retired from Trodgon Furniture Co., where he was an assistant foreman, and a member of Hartwell Church of God. A native of Jones County, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late Charlie and Ella Russell Blount and widow of Carl Davis. A native of Washington, Mr. McLendon was a son of the late Rev. Earl R. and Emma McLendon and widower of Melba Harris McLendon. He was educated at Shiloh Academy in Wilkes County and attended mortuary school in Richmond County. He worked in the funeral business under his grandfather as a young man and opened his own business in 1939, remaining in business for more than 60 years. He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board for 40 years. Rudine Hix Wheeler Munday, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Munday was a daughter of the late J.O. and Mae Barnette Hix and widow of Dr. J. Fred Wheeler. Erskin Roper Hartwell Erskin Roper, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mr. Roper was a son of the late T.F. and Lena Bailey Roper. He was retired from Lavonia Manufacturing Co., where he was an opening room operator. He was of the Baptist faith. Garland Smith Toccoa Garland Wayne Smith, 72, of 218 Queen St. died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998. A native of Rabun County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Will and Maude Jones Smith. He was a graduate of Piedmont College and the University of Georgia and was the principal of Big A School for 32 years prior to retirement in 1982. Thomas Sr., 88, known as "Mule" to his friends, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998. A native of Plantersville, Ala., Mr. Thomas retired after 41 years from Southern Bell in 1974, having worked in Demopolis, Ala., Selma, Ala., and Opelika, Ala. Prior to his career with Southern Bell, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bruton, Ala., 1934-36. He was a member of the Pioneer Clubs of America, the oldest member of Central City Masonic Lodge in Selma and a member since 1955 of First United Methodist Church of Opelika. He spent the last 10 years of his retirement at his home in Lake Martin, near Eclectic, Ala. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Garden Hills Cemetery with Dr. Tim Thompson, pastor of First United Methodist Church, and Dr. John Whatley, retired United Methodist minister and family friend, officiating. Buddy Ward Hartwell Minor Judson "Buddy" Ward, 63, of 259 Shubert Road died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998. A native of Fulton County, Mr. Ward was a son of the late Minor Washington and Amma Wright Ward. He was retired from Cox Publishing as president of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he began working as an apprentice in 1953. He became vice president of production and engineering in 1979 and in 1983 was promoted to president of the papers. He served on the Hart County Board of Commissioners, where he was a past chairman, was chairman of the Hart County Board of Health, a Hart County Literacy volunteer and was active in the Hart County Toys for Tots drives. He was instrumental in the purchase and renovation of the Administrative and Emergency Services Building, creation of the position of Public Works Director, implementation of the enhanced 911 system and creation of the county's first mission statement. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hartwell First Baptist Church with Dr. Hugh Kirby, Walter Gordon and David Easterly officiating. Burial will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park.
