Beavers III Commerce William A. Beavers III, 71, of 134 Magnolia Place died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998. A native of Taylor County, W. Va., Mr. Beavers was a son of Dorothy Rowland Beavers, Commerce, and the late William A. Beavers Jr. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and did post-graduate work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was closely associated with NASA in the early days of space exploration. He was a member of Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Phil Ferguson officiating. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Jody Curry Beavers; two daughters, Bonnie Thomas, Richmond Hill, and Susan Kochanowski, Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Robert I. Beavers Sr., Commerce; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. The family is at the residence. Jim Blackstock Madison Jim Pinion Blackstock died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998. Sgt. Blackstock entered the Army on October 1940 at Fort McPherson and served in the 4th Infantry Division serial No. RA14 029 700. He retired from the Army on July 31, 1951, at the rank of Sergeant First Class. Sgt. Blackstock was involved in the initial wave and was one of the first men to land on Utah Beach, Normandy, France, on "D" Day June 6, 1944, as a platoon leader. He was severely wounded on July 9, 1944, when his lower face was amputated by a mortar blast. He spend the next seven years in Army hospitals around the country receiving treatment and more than 100 operations. Sgt. Blackstock received the Silver Star, one of our nations highest awards for bravery in combat along with the Bronze Star, multiple Purple Hearts, American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and EAME Service Medal. Other awards were bestowed upon him in later years for his combat service and actions. He was informed that due to his military record, he is entitled to a full military burial at Arlington. He was honored and featured in numerous newspaper articles, radio talk shows and local events not only for his combat experiences, but also for his service to local causes. Upon his retirement he was awarded the "Voluntary Service Award" by the Veterans Administration for his hundreds of hours serving as a volunteer at the local VA Hospital. He also worked with the Junior Golf Program in Philadelphia, working with hundreds of kids teaching them the sport he loved. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Brownwood Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Ross officiating. Survivors include his wife Sophie, daughter Joan, sons James and Paul, grandchildren Mary, Jennifer and Stephanie, and sisters, Mary Ann Hawkins and Sara Blackstock, both of Madison. A native of Habersham County, Mrs. Canup was a daughter of the late Clinton and Phoebe Cleveland Worley and was the widow of William Edgar Canup. She was a homemaker and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Double Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Luther Williams and Larry Forrester officiating. Gadell, 84, a resident of Magnolia Estates, 1641 Virgil Langford Road died Thursday night, Oct. 15, 1998. Born in Oconee County, Mrs. Gadell was a daughter of the late Robert Franklin and Katie Lee Norris Christian. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Michael Gadell. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Maxeys, Ga., in the late '30s, later in Oconee County, and for more than 25 years in the Athens-Clarke County schools. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church of Athens and former Chairman of the Board. She remained active in church and civic activities until failing health recently. She accumulated more than 2,800 hours of reading and monitoring of textbooks at the Athens unit of Recording for the Blind. Services will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Lord & Stephens West Chapel on Jimmie Daniels Road, with the Rev. Ray Austin officiating. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Diane Gadell, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Patrick and Alane Gadell of Conyers, Ga.; two grandchildren, Susan G. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired farmer and was a captain with North Jackson Fire Department, which he was instrumental in founding. He was a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church. A native of Richwood, W. Va., Dr. McClung joined the faculty at the University of South Florida as a professor of microbiology in 1966, retiring as professor emeritus in 1990. Prior to his tenure there he had been a professor at the University of Georgia and University of Kansas. He was a member of Sigma Xi Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Sigma and the American Academy of Microbiology. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and Purple Heart for action during D-Day operations, and received a Fulbright Research Award, Kyoto, Japan. Services were Oct. 6 at R. He was an Army veteran of World War II, retired after 23 years, and a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was an airborne instructor at Fort Benning, a farmer and a member of the American Legion, Wildlife Action and Cattleman's Association, and past post commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5899.
