Viola Green Decatur Viola Moore Green was born on March 10, 1917, in Oglethorpe County, one of four children born to the late Lola and Henry Moore. She was educated in the public schools of Oglethorpe County and later attended Morris Brown College. Viola later moved to Athens and on December 24, 1934, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Marion Oliver Green Sr., the first formally trained African-American pharmacist in Georgia. To this union, two children were born: Marion Jr. and Agnes. Mrs. Green was employed at the Atlanta Life Insurance Co. for 18 years and also worked several years at St. Mary's Hospital. She and her family became a mainstay of the Chase Street Community and she spent many hours supporting her children in school and civic activities. She was affectionately known to friends and family as "Black." Mrs. Green lived in Decatur for the past 18 months. She made her final journey home on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998. She will always be loved and missed by: her son, Marion "Duke" Green Jr., Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Dr. Agnes P. Green, Decatur; a daughter-in-law, Derryl McKissack Green, Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Ashley P. Green, Decatur, Stephanie Green, New York City, Brett Green, Washington, D.C., Gloria Jones, Florida, and Ricky Freeman, Washington, D.C.; an aunt, Olivia Willingham, Athens; a special friend, Edward Thompson, Athens; and a host of nieces, cousins, relatives and friends. Harris Mitchell, 84, Professor Emeritus of Music, The University of Georgia, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998. A native of Greensboro, N.C., Dr. Mitchell was a son of the late Rober Harris and Mary Emma Joyce Mitchell of Greensboro, N.C., and the widower of Betty W. Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell was a graduate of Culver Military Academy, Culver, Ind., Carlton College, Northfield, Minn., and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, N.C. He came to the University of Georgia in 1944 and was Director of Bands until 1955. He taught horn and music history until his retirement in 1978. An accomplished French horn player, Dr. Mitchell played in the Atlanta and Augusta symphonies for many years. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. James Oliverio Sr. Winterville James Charles Oliverio Sr. died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998. A native of Johnstown, Penn., Mr. Oliverio was a son of Rocco and Grace Oliverio, born Dec. 29, 1930. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, and received his electrical engineering degree from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963. He was active in the Catholic church, and during the 1960s produced a number of large outdoor festivals for St. Justin Martyr Church in Eastlake, Ohio. He moved to Winterville, Georgia, in 1970 in the employ of Reliance Electric Co. and worked as a consulting engineer for a number of national and regional firms until his sudden death from heart attack at the age of 67. Oliverio is survived by wife Saundra Ann of Winterville and children by his first marriage to Therese Ann Kasper Oliverio: James Oliverio Jr. of Atlanta, age 41, Marie Oliverio of Crawford, age 40, Sharon Carter of Athens, age 39, Mark Oliverio of Houston, Texas, age 34, and Greg Oliverio of Winterville, age 29.
