A native of Greene County, Mr. Ashley was a son of the late Mattie Coffield and William Henry Ashley. He was retired from Mary Leila Cotton Mill and a member of Walker United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Walker United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Maeser officiating. Burial will be in Greensboro City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Askew Ashley; a sister, Grace Garner, Augusta; a son, Lewis Ashley, Greensboro; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive 7-9 p.m. today at McCommons Funeral Home. Fred R. Baldwin Jefferson Fred R. Baldwin, 69, of 54 Dickson Circle died Sunday, May 17, 1998. A native of Miami, Fla., Mr. Baldwin was a son of the late Roba Stanley and Frank Baldwin. He served in the Naval Air Force and the Army Air Force Reserves and was retired from Southern Bell. He chartered the North Georgia Vintage Thunderbird Club and enjoyed restoring vintage Thunderbirds from his shop "The Thunderbird Nest." He was a former member of the Jefferson Lions Club and a member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Plank officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn McNeal Baldwin; two daughters, Kay Martin, Jefferson, and Lisa Duke, Augusta; a son, Bob Baldwin, Jefferson; a sister, Betsy Burwell, Gainesville, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ken Mitchell, Don McNeal, Roger Williams, Chuck Baird, J.B. Jones and Steve Longaker. George D. Collins Danielsville George D. Collins, 86, of 602 Collins-Dudley Road died Monday, May 18, 1998. A native of Madison County, Mr. Collins was a son of the late Charles T. and Savannah Beard Collins and was the widow of Ruth Teate Collins. He was preceded in death by a son, George Brown, a grandson, George "Danny" Collins, and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Eubanks. He was a retired textile worker, having worked at Milliken. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the board of deacons, served on the building committee and was active in all church functions; chaplain for the Georgia Democratic Party and member of John H. Jones Masonic Lodge 348 of Free and Accepted Masons, having served as past Worshipful Master. He was active with the Madison County Senior Citizen Center; he and his late wife were instrumental in seeking grants for the new senior citizen's building and establishing a new greenhouse for the center by providing plants for sale. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Revs. Glenn Guest, Calvin Coile and Dayton Logan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full Masonic rites. Coole, 23, did Saturday, May 16, 1998. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Coole was a daughter of William and Nancy Coole of Belvidere. She graduated from Guilford High School in 1993 as a five-time state swimming champion and co-salutatorian and continued her education and athletics at the University of Georgia, where she was awarded a Foundation Fellowship academic scholarship. She graduated in 1997 magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in biology. Among her numerous achievements, she was the 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year, an NCAA Top 8 honoree, one of Glamour Magazine's Top 10 College Women, the 1996 NCAA 100M Butterfly Champion and an academic and athletic All-American. She was active in community service, including volunteering in the Athens Mentor Program and at a homeless shelter. She had recently completed her first year of veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois-Champaign. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church. She was a retired grower in the poultry industry and of the Baptist faith. Ray Ramey Presque Isle, Maine Ray Thomas Ramey, 58, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998. A native of Warrenton, Mr. Ramey was a son of the late Jerry E. and Margaret Estelle Smith Ramey. He retired in 1977 after serving 20 years in the Air Force and was an OTR truck driver for many years. He was a member of Elks B.P.O.E. No. 1954. Memorial services will be May 22 in Presque Isle. A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mr. Tillman was a son of the late Robert Mitchell and Daisy B. Tillman. He lived in Athens for 41 years and was owner of A-Z Services. A Merchant Marine veteran, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, B&P Sunday school class, Athens Country Club, Amelia Island Golf Club and Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission. He was a Mason, belonging to the Masonic Temple in Tuscaloosa, and past president of Athens Kiwanis Club. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 21, with the Rev. Frank Granger officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Bell Tillman; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Benny Manus, Kay and Mark Isley and Beth and Larry Thomas, all of Athens; a son, Mike Tillman, Athens; two sisters, Elaine T. Waters Flowery Branch Ruth S. Waters, 88, of 3485 Atlanta Highway died Tuesday, May 19, 1998. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by her husband, B.B. Waters, and son, Darryl Waters. She received B.S. and M.A. degrees in education from the University of Georgia, where she majored in English and social studies. She taught in Jackson, Walton and Hall counties, was an elementary school principal and taught high school and junior high social studies. Mrs. Waters taught Georgia history for 16 years at Gainesville Junior High School and retired with 40 years experience. She was a lifetime member of NEH and a member of GRTH. She always was a member of local and state AAWW Gainesville Chapter where she was past president of Honors Societies. Mrs. Waters was a member of Kappa Delta P at UGA and Delta Kappa Gamma. She worked three summers with Title I Program on junior high school level and taught three teacher workshop programs in the social studies field. She was a member of the Gainesville Chapter of Who's Who in Gainesville Teachers, president of State Classroom Teachers in 1965-66, president of Gainesville Teachers Association, chairperson of the 9th District CRT, social studies and retired teachers. In the Methodist church, Mrs. Waters was a superintendent and teacher of Sunday school and was presently serving ton the board of stewards in Christian education. She was on the Hall County Bicentennial Committee and was the bicentennial historian for Home Federal in Gainesville, where she finished 25 brochures for publication. She wrote "TV Guide for Teachers" for Bernice McCullars telecast and also edited Mrs. McCullars' text on Georgia history. For the past eight years she taught GED classes at Lanier Tech. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Redwine United Methodist Church with the Revs. Warren Huddleston and Davis Chappel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas C. and Van H. Waters Sr., Jefferson; two granddaughters, Ellen Kimberly Waters, Gainesville, and Jan Waters and her husband, Gary Goggans, Athens; a grandson, Douglas Clark Waters Jr., Forsyth; and two great-grandchildren.
