A native of Greene County, Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of the late Helen Eva Austin and Billie Charles Edwards. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Greshamville Cemetery with the Rev. Durell Rice officiating. Survivors include a brother, Charles Russell Edwards, Cape Cod, Fla. The family will receive friends 9-11 a.m. Friday at McCommons Funeral Home, Greensboro. Dessie Hughes Seneca, S.C. Dessie Barker Hughes, 81, of 2707 Powell St., died Sunday, April 19, 1998. A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Hughes was a daughter of the late James Gavin and Effie Smith Barker and was the widow of Woodrow Hughes. She was a member of Utica Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home with the Rev. David Shirley officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Memorial Park. Survivors include five sons, Kasler Hughes, Cowpens, S.C., Wallace Hughes, Jefferson, Howard Hughes, Lilburn, Leland Hughes, Fort Mill, S.C., and Dennis Hughes, Athens; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Willie Hood Carlton Willie Melvin Hood, of 7181 Georgia Highway 72 E., died Saturday, April 11, 1998. Mr. Hood was a son of the late Will and Lula Colbert Hood. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Revs. J.W. Evans Jr., Henry Strong and Joseph Barnett officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Alma Johnson Hood; a daughter, Roberta Crawford, Fairborn, Ohio; six sons, Edward Hood, Atlanta, David Hood and Harold Hood, both of Carlton, Randolph Hood, New Orleans, Leonard Hood, Grayslake, and Willie Hood, Fort Belvoir, Va.; and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers were Edward Hood, Randolph Hood, Michael Hood, Edward Hood Jr., David Hood, Leonard Hood, Marvin Hood and Jason Hood. Phelps Funeral Home, Elberton, was in charge of arrangements. Joseph LaRocca Athens Dr. Joseph Paul LaRocca, 77, of 115 Fortson Circle, died at his home on Friday evening, April 17, 1998. Born in LaJunta, Colo., on July 5, 1920, Dr. LaRocca was the son of the late Vito and Mary Parlapiano LaRocca of Pueblo, Colo. He attended the University of Colorado on a football scholarship, receiving his bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1942. He earned a master's degree in medicinal pharmacy from the University of North Carolina in 1944. After his service in World War II as a medical corpsman with the U.S. Army, Dr. LaRocca completed his doctorate at the University of Maryland in 1948. Dr. LaRocca served the University of Georgia from 1949 to 1986 as a professor, Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, and Director of Graduate Studies of the College of Pharmacy, and held the Pfieffer Research Fellowship in 1956. He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was the author of some 25 research publications. Dr. LaRocca was instrumental in establishing the master's and doctoral degree programs of the College of Pharmacy and was the consultant on the design of the present Pharmacy Building. He also served the University of Georgia as a member of the Athletic Board from 1958 until 1986 when, upon retirement, he became an emeritus member. Dr. LaRocca was a member of numerous professional organizations including the American and Georgian Pharmaceutical Associations, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Georgia and New York Academies of Science, Phi Kappa Phi (past president), Rho Chi, Phi Delta Chi, and Sigma Xi (past president). A long-time member of the Athens Rotary Club and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dr. LaRocca was active in civic affairs as a past president of the Board of Directors of the Clarke County Unit of the American Cancer Society, as well as the Athens Clarke County Community Chest, and as a worker for the Athens Association for Retarded Children, most notably as one of the original organizers of Hope Haven School for the Developmentally Disabled. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Joy Nellissery and Father Albert Jowdy officiating. Graveside services will follow at Oconee Hills Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Blair Camak LaRocca; three daughters, Mary Blair LaRocca, Gracewood, Charlotte A. LaRocca, Glastonbury, Conn., and Beth LaRocca-Pitts, Durham, N.C.; a son, Carl A. LaRocca, Milstead; a grandson, Frank LaRocca Hickey, Glastonbury, Conn.; an aunt, Josephine Cascio, Pueblo, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Helen LaRocca, Pueblo, Colo.; and two sons-in-law, Gene Hickey, Glastonbury, Conn., and Mark LaRocca-Pitts, Durham, N.C. Pallbearers will be Harold Hodgson Sr., Mack Lowery, Chester Sosebee, Horace Bell, Lee Pierson, Bill Hartman and Lamar Downs. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Athens Rotary Club and the Faculty of the College of Pharmacy. Mary Latimer Bogart Mary Frances Howard Latimer, 57, of 160 Leora Circle, died Friday, April 17, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Latimer was a daughter of the late Charlie Howard and Mary Frances Brightwell Howard. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Clarke Grove Baptist Church, Stephens, with the Rev. Willie Z. Harris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Survivors include three daughters, Karen Latimer, Bogart, and Betty Mitchell and Jacquelyn Williams, both of Athens; two sons, Bobby Latimer, Athens, and Carl Williams, Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Ruby Gresham, Stephens, and Josephine Howard and Sarah Stephens, both of Athens; three brothers, Charlie H. Howard, Stephens, and Andrew Howard and John M. Howard, both of Atlanta; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. The family is at the residence. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Moore was a son of Versie B. Moore of Bogart and the late Leroy Moore. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Anne Moore. He was self employed as a plumber and a member of Ross Chapel Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Harwell officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Betty Chapman Moore; a daughter, Dianne McCannon, Statham; a son, William L. "Butch" Moore Jr., Ila; a sister, Alene O'Dillion, Bogart; a brother, James C. Moore, Bogart; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Ashley Sesco Largo, Fla. Ashley Elizabeth Sesco, 33, died Friday, April 17, 1998. A native of Carbondale, Ill., Mrs. Sesco was a daughter of Barbara C. May of Indian Shores, Fla., and Jerry A. Sesco of Arlington, Va. She was a senior speech pathologist at Suncoast Hospital and a member of the Florida and American Speech and Hearing associations. A simultaneous memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today in Largo and at First United Methodist Church, Athens. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Basil T. White; two sisters, Robin Elisa Johnson, Evans, and Nichole Rae Venable, Gulfport, Fla.; two grandparents, Felton and Henton Christian, Athens; an aunt, Marian Christian, Athens; and a niece and a nephew.
