Bates Milledgeville Grace Harvell Bates, 83, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998. A native of Johnson County, Mrs. Bates was a daughter of the late John and Nita Edgefield and was the widow of Ernest Bates. She was a homemaker and a member of Scottsboro Baptist Church. Services were Tuesday at Milledgeville Memorial Funeral Home. Burial was in Baldwin Memorial Gardens. Survivors include four sons, David L. Hughes, Hartwell, Doyle Hughes and Don Hughes, both of Milledgeville, and E.R. Hughes, Grovetown; a stepdaughter, Willie Mae Hutchins, Wrightsville; a sister, Pat Hubley, Crownsville, Md.; and a brother, Lonnie Edgefield, Warner Robins. A native of Hall County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Cranford Sylvester and Arizona Anglin Brown. He was retired after 26 years of service with Mount Vernon Mills. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Crossroads Baptist Church with the Revs. Clyde Garrison and Michael Parker officiating. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Byrd was a son of the late Claude and Fannie Whiting Byrd. He was retired after 30 years with Savannah River Nuclear Plant and a member of Grade Baptist Church and Martin Lions Club. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Acree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa, with the Rev. Joel Bradberry officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Chris Sosebee Byrd; two sons, Richard Byrd, Cumming, and David Byrd, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Margaret Andrews Cromer Lavonia Margaret Brewer Andrews Cromer, 68, of 137 Myrtle St. died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998. A native of Talladega, Ala., Mrs. Cromer was a daughter of the late Elijah and Minnie Lee Hay Brewer and was first married to the late Julian Andrews. She was a homemaker and was retired from Coats & Clark, Toccoa, with 30 years of service. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Franklin Memorial Gardens, North, with the Rev. Steven D. Hamby officiating. Survivors include her husband, George W. Cromer; three sisters, Nell Jenkins, Sarasota, Fla., Thelma Clifton, Sylacauga, Ala., and Helen Vick, Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Gerald Brewer, Childersburg, Ala.; and nieces and nephews. A native of Roane, Tenn., Mrs. Maggard was a daughter of the late Cubie and Susie Mae Collins Johnson and was the widow of Elwood Maggard. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Houston County chapter, and of the Baptist faith. Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Bridges Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Reynolds officiating. Burial will be Saturday in Oakland Church Cemetery, Olive Hill, Ky. A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Masters was a daughter of the late Joseph H. and Hassie Hazelett Boswel and was the widow of the late Don William Masters. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Meadows was a son of Zorah Meadows and the late Alvin Meadows. An Army veteran, he was a deacon at Fairfield Baptist Church, Danielsville, and employed at Veratec for 24 years. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Fairfield Baptist Church with the Rev. T. Jackson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rhodes Hartwell Lois Lewis Richardson Rhodes, 93, formerly of West Franklin Place died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Rhodes was a daughter of the late Robert W. and Larcie Campbell Lewis. She was twice married, first to the late Jim Richardson, second to the late Ben Rhodes, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Faye Richardson Burnham. She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home with the Revs. Sid Newell and Luther Kay officiating. Vernard E. Robertson, 84, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998. A native of Guyton, the Rev. Robertson was a graduate of Young Harris College, Emory University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and Candler School of Theology. His pastoral appointments included Cobbtown-Collins; Aldersgate, Wesley Oak and Savannah Beach, all in Savannah; Claxton; Swainsboro; Fort Valley; Americus First; Valdosta District superintendent; and as superintendent of Epworth by the Sea for 13 years. After retiring in 1985, he served at Epworth for 10 years as director of finance and development. He received the President's Medallion in 1995 from Young Harris College. He was a former member of the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club and Masonic Lodge. He serve on the South Georgia Conference Board of Evangelism, Board of Ministry and Conference Finance and Administration. He was a trustee of South Georgia Conference, Andrew College and Epworth by the Sea. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica with the Revs. G. Thomas Martin III, C. Dick Reese and James O. Williams and Bishops Marion Edwards and Richard C. Looney officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. today in Guyton City Cemetery, Guyton.
