Bill Barker officiating. Burial will be in Ross Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Butler; two daughters, Lisa K. Alton Finch Danielsville Alton Van Finch, 74, of 3510 Booger Hill Road died Monday, July 20, 1998. A native of Nash County, N.C., Mr. Finch was a son of the late G.N. and Pella Daniel Finch. He was a graduate of East Carolina University and received his Doctorate of Business Education from the University of Northern Colorado. He was retired from both the University of Mississippi and East Carolina University, a former professor at the University of Georgia and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Madison Chapel. Survivors include his wife, Leona S. Finch, Danielsville; two daughters, Norma Fitzpatrick, Danielsville, and Claire Butler, Greenwood, Ind.; two sisters, Dorothy Williams, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Premmie Morgan, Garner, N.C.; a brother, William Finch, Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to YWCO, 562 Research Drive, Athens, Ga. 30605. Herman Gartrell Washington Herman Ellis Gartrell, 67, of 842 Amity Road died Sunday, July 19, 1998. A native of Wilkes County, Mr. Gartrell was a son of the late Frank and Mary Gartrell. He was a logger, a farmer and a member of Zoah Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zoah CME Church with the Rev. Robert Walton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Christine Gartrell; a daughter, Brenda Gartrell, Harrisburg, Penn.; two sons, Scottie Victor Gartrell, Washington, and Gregory Gartrell, Atlanta; and three grandchildren. McLendon Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Earl N. Hester Fayetteville Earl N. Hester, age 69, of Fayetteville, Ga., died at home July 20, 1998, after a long illness. He was the youngest son of eight children born to Elmo C. Hester Sr. and Frances L. Miller of Cuthbert, Ga. Mr. Hester left home to attend the University of Georgia at 16, but kept the dawn-to-dusk work habits of his family's farm. For the past 10 years, he grew thousands of specialty azaleas and operated Peach State Growers Supply in Fayetteville. A past president of the Oconee Chapter of the Azalea Society of America, his idea of fun was repotting several hundred azalea cuttings before breakfast. For many years he worked as a salesman for and eventually became president of Jiffy Products of America, a commercial grower supply business based in West Chicago, Ill. That job took him on frequent trips throughout the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and South America. Mr. Hester graduated from the University of Georgia with bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture. He served in the U.S. Army's occupational forces in Korea in 1946 and 1947. He joined the Army Reserves (Armor) in Athens, Ga., eventually attaining the rank of major. He was called back to active duty in 1952 and completed Army Ranger training at Fort Benning, Ga. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Dorothy Griffeth; two sons, Nolan of El Cerrito, California, and Neil of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Jean Hester of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Nelle Watters of Rome, Ga., and Myra Turnage of Blakely, Ga.; and numerous nieces nd nephews. The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home Thursday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Leonard Cobb officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park. Mable S. McCrary Canon Mable Strickland McCrary, 89, of 1580 Airline-Goldmine Road died Monday, July 20, 1998. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. McCrary was a daughter of the late Allen "Oak" and Lelia Perrin Strickland and was the widow of Loray "Mac" McCrary. She was a retired agent for American Family Life Insurance Co., a retired registered nurse, a homemaker and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Alan McCrary, Canon; a stepson, Ray McCrary, Gaithersburg, Md.; and two grandchildren. A native of East Liverpool, Ohio, Mrs. Morrison was the widow of Nathan J. Morrison II. Private memorial services will be later in Maryland. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy L. Morrison, Athens; a son, N. Jackson Morrison III, Stone Mountain; a sister, Eleanor Stewart, Cudiz, Ohio; and three grandsons. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Nicholson was a daughter of the late Jim David and Laura Vester Haggard Wofford and was the widow of the late Ernest Lee Nicholson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Luis Ortiz officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery. She owned and operated Wages Grocery, Henderson Extension, for 30 years and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Sara Wages Arnold, Athens; a granddaughter, Anita Woodruff, Athens; two grandsons, Bucky Woodruff and Matt Woodruff, both of Athens; and nieces and nephews.
