A native of Hart County, Mr. Ankerich was a son of the late Pat and Jessie Brown Ankerich. An Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was retired after 32 years as a loom fixer at Newton Mills and also was a farmer. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Sunshine Club and was a deacon and former Sunday school teacher. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Cross Roads Baptist Church with the Revs. Ben Coleman, David Wilson and Connie Mack Bowers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. William Winston Smith, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998. A native of Richardson, Texas, Mr. Smith was a son of the late William and Edna Royer Smith. A 40-year resident of Canterbury and Concord, he was awarded the Lassonde Award from the New Hampshire Art Association in 1997 and the McGowan Award by the Antiquari an Society in 1994. He began his education in painting at the Dallas Institute of Art at the age of 12, and his paintings have been shown throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe. During World War II, he served in the Army and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery, as well as six other medals, while working behind enemy lines in France mapping territory for advancing Allied Forces. Graveside services will be in June in Maple Grove Cemetery, Canterbury.
