A native of Greenup County, Ky., Mr. Adkins was a son of the late William Addie and Melissa A. Adkins. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a farmer and employed 16 years in the aircraft industry with Rohr Corporation. He was a member of Life Line Church in Bowersville. Mrs. Hughes was a daughter of Dobson Gay Sr. of Garfield. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, and taught school in Columbus, Ind., and Charlotte, N.C. She was site coordinator for the After School Enrichment Program in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System 1990-94. She served two terms as North Carolina State PTA president, was named National PTA vice-president of the Southeast U.S. region in 1986 and was a member of the National PTA Board of Directors 1982-88. She was awarded the North Carolina Volunteer Service to Children Award, elected to the North Carolina Child Advocacy Institute, served on numerous education and citizen advisory councils and boards, and was a former president of the Quality Education Committee for Charlotte, N.C. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Elam Baptist Church Cemetery, Millen, with Crowe-Fields of Millen in charge of arrangements.
